Fat Trimmers!

It's a new year tomorrow and United's first resolution is to 'trim the fat' and they can make a start with the 'fat controller', aka Linfield manager David Jeffrey. The bigoted Jeffrey has been stirring the 'pot' all week by leaking news that he has signed United keeper Alan Blaney and wants to sign top scorer Neal Teggart, but you don't fool us Davey, all you're trying to do is break our team spirit, but it won't wash. United manager Roy Walker is much too wily an old fox to let himself be fooled by an upstart like Jeffrey, he knows that the Linfield bigot is trying to reflect attention away from the shortcomings of his own under-performing players. The team news for United is not good, with stand-in Captain Stuarty King out with a broken ankle and his purported replacement Phillip Carson's loan deal from Glentoran being rescinded, the manager is down to the bare bones of his squad. In a move to bolster his injury hit squad Walker has sought permission to talk to former United player Paul Muir and if he gets him United's fans will have to come to terms with Muir's part in the 'Lamb Shank' fiasco (still fresh in our minds) and put it behind them, welcoming him back into the fold. It's unlikely Muir would be available for tomorrow's game anyway and with the 'Cush' passed fit it's a straight choice between Liam Mullan and Ryan Deans, assuming all other players are fit. Manager Walker would not be drawn on whether he would omit Alan Blayney from his starting line-up if it transpired that he had held talks with the 'fat' controller, or indeed any Linfield official, without notifying our club. It was nice to see the large number of fans at the Showgrounds on Boxing Day (biggest competitive gate in recent history)and hopefully there'll be a decent turn-out for tomorrow's game at Windsor Park. Here we go once again, it's all systems go for another three points, come on United, let's shag those villagers!

Platt Swat!

United go into tomorrow's derby match with the Coleraine scum on the back of four straight wins, while the scum have accumulated four straight losses, but as is usual in these games, form means nothing. Tomorrow's game is all about passion and about giving 'your all' for the cause, in other words the sort of display United have put in over the last four games. To the best of our knowledge (we haven't a bloody clue), United have no injury worries for the game and if that is the case, it'll be up to the United manager who he omits from Saturday's starting line-up, or if he continues with his 3,5,2 formation or reverts back to a 4,4,2. Whatever happens, the one thing that's certain, anyone who plays will know they've been in a match and after all that's all we ask. United manager Roy Walker will have to decide in the next week if he wants to keep his 7 players on the transfer list, as the January transfer window is looming. Gavin McDonnell, Aiden Watson, Tommy Wray and Mike Ward have all done enough in the last few games to make the manager think again, while the 'injury prone' Davitt Walsh has been unfortunate enough to pick up another injury. But that's all in the future, first things first and tomorrow is one of the 'biggest' games of the year and we envisage just one outcome, a victory for United over the Coleraine scum. So come on Sky Blues, let's give those Bannsiders the Boxing Day blues, in short, let's shag that scum!

Glen Gar(R)y!

The Glengarry is the name of the Scottish bonnet and with our close links to that country, we at 'Sport can think of no more apt rallying call for tomorrow's game against league leaders Glentoran. But in our case it's a two word call Glen for the green glen of the Braid valley and 'Gary' for team Captain Gary Haveron, so cruelly laid low with a broken shin bone. Through all our trials and tribulations this season, the one bright beacon was the 'never say die' attitude of the big Larne man. He led the team by example, whatever he was called on to do he did it and we are gonna miss him really badly and we're gonna miss his leadership qualities most of all. Manger Roy Walker not only needs a replacement for Gary the player, he also needs a replacement for Gary the team Captain. After due thought and consideration (two bottles of white wine), we think the best candidate is Stuarty King. Stuarty's form has been good recently and we believe that he will revel in the added responsibility of team Captain and where better to start than at the Oval. Now for a guess at team selection, assuming everyone's fit it's a case of bringing in Tommy Wray and going for three at the back or going with either young Ryan Deans or Liam Mullan in midfield. Mike Ward, the two goal hero from last week should hold his place up front with 'King Kevin' Kelbie, who usually enjoys a trip back to his old 'stamping' ground. So it's all systems go for three more points tomorrow, come on United, let's shag those Bally ma carrots!

Lovely Time!

'Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to Bangor', goes the old song and hopefully United fans will be singing that on their way home tomorrow night. We have a chance tomorrow to record a third win in a row, but it's going to be a tough ask against one of the form teams in the league at present. The 'bad news' for United fans is that Boydie has been passed fit, but it will give us a chance to compare young Lee Colligan against the man we still like to think of as ours. We wonder if manager Roy Walker will be tempted to say same again, continuing with his 3,5, 2 formation and leaving Kevin on the bench. There is an unconfirmed report that Kevin is still suspended anyway but we're sure manager Walker will check that out before naming his panel. Davitt Walsh looks set for a longish run in the first team as Neal Teggart could be out for a considerable time and in fact may not play again this season. This return to winning ways for the Sky Blues has been achieved without top scorer Teggart and two defensive stalwarts from last season, Albert Watson and Craig McLean. McClean has in fact only made 7 first team appearances this term and hasn't played first team football for exactly two months. We at 'Sport are still not convinced about Gavin McDonnell, he seems okay in the air but his distribution with his feet is diabolical and he kept us on tenterhooks last Tuesday night as time and again he played us into trouble with poor clearances in the closing stages of the game. But he is the man in possession at the moment and alongside Aaron Stewart and Tommy Wray, they have given us some stability at the back. One thing we can depend on tomorrow is that that 'wily old fox', Marty Quinn, will have his team fired up for this game and will want to put one over on the Sky Blues. So come on United, let's shag those Bangor Bunnies!

King Richard!

It's Crusade time for United tomorrow, when the modern day Crusaders come to town determined to crush the wee Sky Blues. United's injury list shows no sign of abating and the latest casualty team Captain Gary Haveron is doubtful after picking up a leg injury in last week's victory at Mourneview Park. On the plus side Gavin Melaugh has served his one game suspension and may come in if Haveron is ruled out. Striker Kevin Kelbie is serving a one game suspension and manager Walker must decide if he should go with Davit Walsh and either Paul McNeil or Mike Ward or maybe something completely different. It will also be interesting to see if he sticks to the three at the back formation which brought United only their fourth win in all competitions this term. United need to unearth a modern day King Richard in order to halt the Crusaders juggernaut and who better than the inspirational and aptly named Stuarty 'King' who can lead them to victory tomorrow. Stuarty had his best ever game in a Sky Blue shirt last week, scoring one and setting up the other two goals, as well as having an inspirational day in midfield. Needless to say yet another likewise performance is required tomorrow if United are to continue their Crusade of climbing off the foot of the table. Tomorrow is United's last but one home game of 2008 (the other is against a nameless team from the 'smelly' town) and they are hosting yet another Corporate dinner, so three points would be the 'icing on the cake'. It won't be easy, but it is possible, 'only believe'. So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those toothless tigers!

Only Believe!

We're making an appeal to Sky Blue fans here tonight, please endeavour to come along to Mourneview Park tomorrow, weather permitting and cheer on United. All you have to do is 'believe' we have a chance (which we do), Mourneview park is after all one of our 'happy hunting' grounds and many a victory we've squeezed out against the odds at that venue. Tomorrow will be no exception, we go there with absolutely no form whatsoever and probably having to play at least three or maybe four of the players transfer listed by our manager. It's easy to see what he's about as he tries to rid himself of the vestiges of former manager Tommy Wright's disastrous signings. Take the two McDonnell's, Gav and Joe as a case in point. Both were signed on a pre-contract (allegedly on high wages), by our former manager and let's be honest about it, who had heard of either of them before he signed them and their form since signing has been at best, mediocre. Mark Picking meanwhile was given an extension to his contract about this time last year, but hardly played the rest of the season. Tommy Wray was signed as cover at rightback a position United haven't filled since Kenny Shiels got rid of Mark Carlisle and is at best only average. Aiden Watson, yet another of Wright's big signings has flitted in and out of the team failing to hold down a starting role. Our two back-up strikers haven't set the world alight, although Walsh, in our opinion, needs a good run in the first team, while Wardy has been afflicted by the same disease as Austin Friel, the inability to score goals, even missing sitters like Austie did during his tenure at the Showgrounds. With Gavin Melaugh serving a one game ban, Aiden Watson could get the nod in centre-midfield, while we won't be surprised if Gav holds down the central defensive pairing alongside Archie Stewart. Someone must be found to partner Kevin Kelbie up front and it's a toss-up between, Wardy and Walsh (we somehow don't think Roy will have the 'belief' to go with W.K.D. attack), but then again he might as well, after all we've got nothing to lose. So come on Sky Blue fans, get your asses down to Lurgan and come on Sky Blues, let's shag (not literally we hasten to add), those Mourneviewers!

Shoot 'Stute!

It's shoot on site for United's strikers and midfielders in tomorrow's match at home to Institute. The time for defensive tactics is over, let's go out with a 'bang' we at 'Sport say, we've tried to play the game, but they won't let us. With the United manager being forced to make at least three changes for tomorrow's game, the two Watson's out, Albert injured, Aiden suspended for one game and likely to face a further ban for accumulating 30 points and top scorer Neal Teggart out injured, the time is ripe for United;s 'fringe' strikers to stake a claim for a starting role. Mike Ward, Paul McNeill and Davitt Walsh are the three vying for Teggart's position, while Joe McDonnell seems to be the obvious replacement for Aiden Watson in midfield. We, the Sport's team, would like to see Gary Haveron back in centre midfield as Gavin Melaugh needs a proven ball winner alongside him and let's run with the other 'Gavin' McDonnell in centre defence alongside Archie Stewart, let's face it, we've got nothing to lose. So it's all systems go for 3 points tomorrow, so come on United, let's shag those Foylesiders!

Swift Response!

United have a great chance to bounce back with a win that would lift them off the bottom of the Premier league table, when they travel to Dungannon tomorrow. Admittedly Stangmore Park has not been a 'happy hunting ground' for the Sky Blues in recent seasons, but it's getting to that stage where wins are almost vital if United are to haul themselves away from the relegation trap door. Manager Walker has a full panel to pick from and will no doubt consider including former Swifts old boys, Mike Ward and Tommy Wray in his final 16 players. Wardy gave the manager a gentle nudge when scoring a hat-trick for the reserves recently, while Wray came on and performed admirably in United's previous away fixture, a 2-1 victory at the Oval in the C.I.S.cup 1st round. Unfortunately victory wasn't enough to see the Sky Blues through to the next stage of the competition, but they battled well nonetheless and require another similar performance tomorrow at Dungannon. Hopefully the United fans will get out of their armchairs and come along to give the team their backing, but if not they'll just have to soldier on with the dedicated few. So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Tyronians!

Unlimited Sky!

United go into this their first ´Sky´match with a full strength panel to choose from. Will United manager Roy Walker tinker with the line-up which brought United only their 2nd away victory this year. Or will he work on the old adage ´horses for courses´after having Gerry Flynn´s men watched in previous games. The canny West Belfast man predicted and crafted United´s victory at the Oval last Tuesday night and another tomorrow night in front of the Sky cameras would help immensly in United´s push up the table. Hopefully they´ll be one or two more witnesses in attendance and hopefully the right result will be achieved. So come on Sky Blues, let´s shag those south down boys!

All Oval!

If we're to believe all that's written in the papers, or printed on Teletext, it's all over for United in tomorrow night's game in the C.I.S. cup, as they trail by 3-1. On 'paper' and given the placings in the league of the two teams, Glens at the top, ourselves at the bottom, we'd have to agree. But less than twelve months ago, in fact exactly to the day, 44 short weeks, United went to the Oval as 'lambs to the slaughter' and came away with a fully deserved 4-2 victory. It was a 'herculean' effort by the Sky Blues that day and another one is required for tomorrow night if we are to have any chance of getting to the next phase of this competition. To the best of our knowledge all of Saturday's panel came through unscathed, although there's a slight doubt about Aiden Watson, who had to come off late against the Reds. If Aiden fails to make the line-up, Tommy Burke or Tommy Wray are waiting in the wings to take his place. The flying Scotsman, Kevin Kelbie will fly in tomorrow and we expect him to line-up alongside Neal Teggart and after two games where their partnership failed to bring a score (Teggart didn't figure against the Glens last week) surely they should set that record straight tomorrow night. So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Townies!

Solly Blundell!

Sorry that should read, 'Solly Blunder', the blunder being the site of their new stand, we the visiting fans are already subjected to the 'jaundiced' view from behind the goals and now the home fans have a similar view. This was, as I'm sure like all so called ground improvements, done in the interest of spectators, I just wish that for once they'd ask and listen to, the views of spectators. Who in their right mind would want to watch a game from behind the 'goals'? Apart from Coleraine fans I can't think of anybody, but then again Coleraine fans are fairly insane, as the old saying goes, 'you don't have to be mad to be a Coleraine fan, but it helps'! But we digress, United must do without the services of central defender Albert Watson, out with suspected ankle ligament damage (not as bad as first suspected, but still a bad injury). Team Captain Gary Haveron returns after serving his one match ban, but will the United manager be loath to partner two left sided central defenders, in Gary and young Archie Stewart? Tommy Burke signed from Derry City could be drafted into a central role, but we fear that reserve player Chris Getty is just not ready for the step-up in class yet. We are unaware if Neal Teggart is fit to resume, but if he is not reserve striker Paul McNeil did enough in his brief appearance on Wednesday night to warrant a starting role. Despite missing a 'sitter' on Wednesday night we expect Kevin Kelbie with 116 career goals to his credit to get the nod in the other striking role. Liam Mullen given a rest on Wednesday, showed the sort of enthusiasm needed when he came on as a sub, which could earn him a starting role against the North Belfast Reds. While Stuarty King looks poised to make his 101st appearance in a Sky Blue shirt. That just leaves the central midfield partnership to be sorted. Gavin Melaugh and Joe McDonnell so far have only gelled in a couple of games and their positions must surely be up for grabs! One things certain for tomorrow, a win is vital, let's have no more excuses, so come on United, let's shag those Chickens (Dessie Loughrey included)!

Haveron 't Got!

United go into tomorrow night's first-leg C.I.S. cup tie at home to Glentoran, without the services of team captain Gary Haveron. The big Larne man misses his first game this season after accumulating 20 penalty points, courtesy of five yellow cards. To the unfamilar it might seem that Gary was a typical hard hitting defender, but nothing could be further from the truth as there isn't a more honest and fair player in our league. Gary is the victim of his own style and commitment and referees tend not to make allowances for that these days. Also doubtful for the Sky Blues is top scorer and another ever present this season, Neal Teggart. The 'big' striker had to come off at halftime at Ballyskeagh on Saturday and is rated doubtful for tomorrow night's game. Archie Stewart is expected to get the nod in Haveron's place and if Teggart fails to make it, Mike Ward could make a rare start alongside Kelbie. With Tommy Burke returning to the panel manager Roy Walker will have to decide between him and Aiden Watson for the rightback slot and he may be tempted to bring in Mark Picking in wide midfield at the expense of Liam Mullan who failed to impress last Saturday. Hopefully United can give a good account of themselves in this game, so come on Sky Blues, lets shag those wise men from the east!

Aiden & Abetting

With the unavailability of Roy Walker's latest teenage fullback, Tommy Burke, it looks like an immediate recall for tigerish midfielder Aiden Watson, to wear the number 2 shirt. Aiden, having served his one game suspension (and not Albert as we and many others intimated last week), looks likely to get a recall, but then again United manager Roy Walker may have other ideas up his sleeve. He may also have one eye on United's first-leg C.I.S. cup game at home to the Glens next Wednesday night and will no doubt be glad of the players he has in reserve with United playing 4 times in the next 11 days. To the best of our knowledge (we haven't a bloody clue in other words), the rest of United's starting 11 from last week are ready and willing and we doubt that Walker will tinker too much with his starting 11. Mike Ward, who 'allegedly' collided with Glens substitute John Taylor's arm last Saturday, may get a place on the bench despite having to get stitches in a nasty head wound. Young Archie Stewart will we fear also have to settle for a seat on the bench, but his time will come. With the unavailability of Davitt Walsh with a hamstring injury, the fit again Mark Picking will probably be recalled to the United bench. Teenage sensation Lee Colligan looks set to continue in the leftback slot, as Craiggers remains on the injured list. United will be looking to their twin strikers, Kelbie and Teggart to exact some revenge on the 'whites' for a narrow defeat in our last meeting, while United fans will be hoping for a chance to 'jeer' former player Paul Muir, a leading protagonist in the 'ham shank' riot at the Showgrounds last season. Whatever the outcome we expect United fans to turn up in numbers to cheer their heroes on, so come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Lambeggars!

Friday, 17 October 2008

Green Glens!

United entertain the second of 'Belfast's big two tomorrow when the Glens come to God's country. After last weeks ground breaking first win against unbeaten league leaders Linfield, United have to repeat the 'dose' when Setanta cup finalist's Glentoran, come to the Showgrounds. This will be the 3rd meeting between the two teams so far this season and another two will follow over the next month, when the teams meet in the two-legged, Setanta Cup. United fans won't need reminding of the 10 goals conceded in the two previous meetings and tomorrow they must do without the services of the suspended Albert Watson and Craiggers McClean who misses the game with a knee injury, but at least Liam Mullan is available to take his place. That only leaves the manager looking for a replacement for his former Captain. We assume that Aaron Stewart will still be missing so this may open the door for either Tommy Wray or the out of favour Gavin McDonnell, who hasn't tasted first team action since the away league game against tomorrow's opponents on Tuesday September 23. The Dubliner only lasted 45 minutes in that game and manager Walker may be loath to risk him in this vital game. The same may be said about reserve player Chris Getty, although his breakthrough to the first team looks imminent. The Sky Blue Sport's team wonder if the United manager will go with Wardy, who looked so impressive when he came on as a sub last week, in place of the ineffective Stuart King. Wardy sent over two 'gems of crosses' last week against the Blues and we would lay money that former United prolific strikers, Peter Withnell and Paul Malone, would have dispatched them into the net. He also set up Kelbie for his second goal and surely must be pushing for a start against his former club. For the second game running United have the chance to topple the league leaders, now wouldn't that be something? So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those 'Carrot' eaters!

Friday, 10 October 2008

Talker Walker!

United manager Roy walker has been quoted on teletext as saying United have a chance of turning over Linfield tomorrow. Yes it was an encouraging display at Coleraine last Saturday and we were the best team over the 90 minutes, but we only ended up with a point and 'rode our luck' during the closing stages of the game. We also had two encouraging displays against Newry and Institute, should have won both of them, 'choked' in the closing stages to salvage a draw on both occasions. Two things to remember about those first two drawn games, (1)they were away from home, (2) they were followed by successive league defeats at home, conceding 3 goals without reply on both occasions. Hopefully tomorrow will prove to be a 'different kettle of fish', but United don't need any added pressure, playing the Belfast Blues is pressure enough. The good news for United is that Craigers McClean is fit once more and not a moment too soon as his replacement in recent games, Liam Hogan, is out injured. Also missing from the United line-up tomorrow are, winger Mark Picking (groin strain) and Liam Mullan (prior engagement). This will probably mean a recall for former Blues player, Stuarty King on the left, while Aiden Watson may move up from fullback to wide right, paving the way for Tommy Wray to return at rightback. Kevin Kelbie will we hope be restored to his more usual role as a foil for top scorer Neal Teggart, rather than wasted wide left as he was last week against Coleraine. Manager Roy Walker may of course have completely different ideas, but hopefully we'll get the right result no matter who gets the 'nod'. So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those blooming Townies!

Show Time1

Yes tomorrow is the biggest game for United this season and it will go a long way to fashioning the outcome of this first season in the new Premier league. On form we are on a hiding to nothing, but as we all know form goes out the window in 'derby' games. We have come here many times on the crest of a wave and left with nothing and we have come here many times playing poorly and left in high spirits. For some of our players this will be their first taste of the atmosphere of a Ballymena/Coleraine derby, but hopefully it will be a pleasant and not a 'sickening' experience for them. A win tomorrow or even a hard fought draw and it could kick-start the rest of our season, a defeat, is unthinkable. United must do without the services of local keeper Sean O'Neill who has flu symptoms and this means a recall for number one choice Alan Blaney. Blaney has been less than impressive since signing for the Sky Blues, but tomorrow he gets a chance to put the record straight. Manager Roy Walker has hinted at quite a few changes, but we at 'Sport would caution the United supremo to go easy on the players. Last Saturday they never got a break, okay they contributed to their own downfall with two bad lapses in defence, but they also had no luck at the other end, especially when a Kelbie shot luckily hit keeper Plummer on the knee and bounced to safety, a goal then and the points would have been in the bag. That said we can ill afford any of the 'kamikaze' defending of the first half of that game when we failed to put in a meaningful tackle and allowed the Bangor forwards to 'run rings round us'. Our headline says 'show time', but perhaps it should really say, 'time to show', as that old saying goes, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going' and now's the time for our team to get going. So come on United, let's shag those stinking gas-men!

Leader Albert!

In the opinion of the Sky Blue Sport team, Albert Watson should be restored as team Captain, Gary Haveron is a great guy, but he's just not cut out for the job. But Albert has proved he has the knack and he also has an important role to play in the development of young Aaron Stewart. The son of Alfie Stewart he may be, but he still has a few rough edges and who better to hone them than the man who 'whipped' Johnny Flynn in to shape. Young Johnny was transferred to premier English league side, Blackburn Rovers, where he continues to make progress, but he started out under the guidance of United Captain Albert Watson. Is Albert about to found another dynasty in the shape of young Stewart I wonder? The short answer to that query is that it's too early to tell, but there were some encouraging signs during the 2nd half of Tuesday night's defeat away to the Glens. Tomorrow though is a must win game and United must succeed without the services of Davitt Walsh, who missed training on Thursday night with flu symptoms. If all the remainder of players are fit, the manager could do worse than start with the finishing 11 players who played with a fair amount of confidence, without creating too many openings. So its all systems go for United tomorrow, so come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Downies!

Don't Know!

We haven't clue as to United's line-up for tomorrow night's game, after last Saturday's display most of the team deserves a rest. But we must keep the faith and the players need to dig deep into their survival instincts and somehow get us a result from this game. How they do it we don't know, manager Roy Walker tried the defensive route on our last trip to the Oval and we found out how disastrous that was. So maybe the old cliché about the 'best means of defence being attack', is our best option. The only certainty is that the Sky Blue Sport's team will be there in full force, so come on United let's if not 'shag those townies', at least give them some cause for concern, you owe us at least that much!

Friday, 19 September 2008

Rave On!

We're back, okay we were never actually away, but we just had some personal issues to sort out and here we go once again with our suitcase in our han.... Ignore that statement, it's something completely different and in many ways that's what we expect to see from United tomorrow. Firstly we expect a vastly different line-up to that which fought so valiantly on Tuesday night, Kevin Kelbie & Neal Taggart should return to the attack, as it's a case of horses for courses and nowhere is that more evident than at Seaview. The tight shore road pitch doesn't lend itself to close passing football and no-one knows that better than United's manager, sure didn't he go down in history as the man who guided unfashionable Crusaders to two league titles, but now his first task is to get United back on the right track. This will be no easy task against the 'high flying' Crues., the 'hatchet men' have got off to a brilliant start and suffered their first defeat away to Linfield last Saturday, but by all reports gave a good account of themselves, so United will need to be on top form if they are to 'stop the rot' and take a very rare three points at Seaview tomorrow. The back four and keeper Sean O'Neill deserve another go (barring any injuries), while the 'Cush' surely deserves another start in wide midfield. The unlucky loser here looks likely to be Aiden Watson, as Gavin Melaugh and Gary Haveron look certain to hold the centre midfield role. Mark Picking could be a surprise selection at right midfield, as he might give the Sky Blues more attacking options than Davitt Walsh or 'Wardy'. Or will the manager be so bold as to employ the much heralded (well heralded by Sky Blue Sport at least), W. K. D. attack its head, these are drastic times and they call for drastic measures. Whatever the line-up one thing's certain, United need a result from this game tomorrow, anything else and Roy Walker will have no hair left at all! So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Townies!

'Stute Decisions!

United manager Roy Walker has promised a major shake-up to his starting line-up for tomorrow's game at Drumahoe, against Institute. He has intimated that at least two players are getting the 'chop' in the back four. Craig McClean, who made his 100th appearance for the club last week, is expected to make way for either Liam Mullan or Liam Hogan and in a surprise move, former team captain, Albert Watson, could be omitted in favour of Aaron Stewart. The fit again, Gavin Melaugh should return to the action at the expense of Joe McDonnell, who at times runs about like a 'headless' chicken. The manager's only other big decision is deciding which strike force to start with, as last season's top scorer, Kevin Kelbie, must surely rate a starting role. Kelbie it seems must wait at least another 4 months before taking up the game as a full-time player, when Linfield's valuation of the United player fell well short of our board's expectations. United keeper Neal Blaney will no doubt come under close scrutiny as he has dropped a few 'clangers in his first 3 league games and with young Sean O'Neill waiting in the wings, another slip-shod performance could definitely cost him his place. Weather permitting, tomorrow's encounter which kicks-off at 2pm, should prove a good contest between the Sky Blues and the home side, who always raise their game for this fixture. So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Londoners (sorry, Londonderriers, if their is such a word, although according to our spell check their isn't)!

Swiftly Back!

United make a quick return to action tomorrow at home to Dungannon Swifts at the old Showgrounds, just three and a half days after battling out a draw away to Newry City. United manager Roy Walker could do worse than say same again, as in the continued absence of Gavin Melaugh, Tuesday night's starting (and finishing) eleven looked to be about his best combination. He may of course be tempted to play striker Kevin Kelbie, who was unavailable for Tuesday's fixture, but it would be hard luck if Davitt Walsh had to stand down in order to accommodate the Scotsman, as he was one of the stars at Newry. The rest of the team, barring injuries, should more or less pick itself and maybe Tommy Wray can advance his scoring credentials against his former club. United had a very poor return on Tuesday night with twelve corners and only one goal to show from them, no doubt manager Walker will want to address that situation and who better to show the way than Tommy Wray. Tommy has already scored twice for the Sky Blues and will always be a hero to most United fans, as it was against the Coleraine Scum so maybe he would be a good target man in these dead-ball situations. At any rate we can't go on squandering chances at the rate we have been doing and Saturday would be a good time to redress this situation. So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Dungannoners!

This Time!

After two false starts hopefully the Irish league will kick-off tomorrow when Cliftonville pay a visit to the Showgrounds. There have been some very tight games between the Reds and the Sky Blues, in the last few seasons, unfortunately from our point of view the Belfast team have shaded most of the results. United manager Roy Walker will be out to reverse that trend no doubt and he will be boosted by the return of Kevin Kelbie and Stuarty King after both served a one match ban, eventually. King in fact could get an instant call-up to the first team, as Joe McDonnell should move inside to replace the injured Gavin Melaugh, alongside Peter Kennedy. The United manager will then have to decide whether to leave out a striker in order to accommodate Kelbie, or to tinker with the midfield in order to play all three. He also may play central defender Gavin McDonnell, at the expense of Gary Haveron, or opt for a 'safety first' approach and move big Gary into the left-midfield slot, where he has performed admirably in the past. Our own feeling is that King will get the nod and Gary will lose out to Gavin, while Kevin will start on the bench, but who are we to second guess the 'great' Roy Walker. The rest of the team, as far as we are aware, should more or less pick itself, but there are enough players in the 'panel' to allow for a bit of 'tweaking', if the manager so desires. So it's all systems go for three points, come on Sky Blues, let's shag those chickens!

Late Report!

United, as expected, progressed to the next round of the 'Shield' courtesy of a first half goal from Davitt Walsh and a second half brace from 'red hot' striker Neal Teggart, one of which was a cheeky back-heel, 'a la Paul Hardy' no doubt. Fit again defender Gavin McDonnell came on as a sub and looked impressive according to reports. United's reward for their victory is an away tie to 'Shield' holders Glentoran, that one should be a 'cracker', we can hardly wait!

Half Chance!

We suppose there's only a 50-50 chance that tonight's County Antrim shield match against Ballyclare Comrades will actually go ahead. Never mind the weather, there's the state of the Showgrounds pitch after the 'stock cars' have had their run over it. As for team selection we expect the United manager to play his strongest eleven and hopefully a victory will be the outcome, nothing less will do. Unfortunately none of the Sky Blue Sport team are going to make the game as we have a prior engagement, but we will endeavour to publish the result and the scorers, it's the least we can do. So it's all systems go for tonight's game, so come on United let's shag those comrades!

Merchant Bank!

Ballymena begin the long trek for the 'holy grail' of Irish league football, the Gibson cup, with probably the biggest first team panel in their history. Twenty five players will have their name emblazoned on a Sky Blue shirt, the latest recruit being former Wigan player Peter Kennedy. The 34 year-old Kennedy finally put pen to paper on Wednesday night and United manager Roy Walker acclaimed him as the final piece in the jig-saw. We at 'Sport expect the versatile Kennedy to line up in centre midfield alongside Gavin Melaugh tomorrow, while another new boy, Joe McDonnell seems destined to get the wide left berth, as Stuarty King sits out a one game ban. Right midfield appears to be a toss-up between Picking and the on-loan McGinley, with the latter expected to 'get the nod' from manager Walker. The United back four should be four stalwarts from last season, Wray, Watson, Haveron and McClean in front of new keeper Neal Blaney. Top scorer from the last 2 seasons, Kevin Kelbie, must sit out the game due to a one game ban also and in his absence Neal Teggart and Davitt Walsh will be asked to lead the line. Competition for places on the United bench is expected to be fierce with13 players vying for 5 vacancies. If we at 'Sport were selecting we'd go for, Cushley, Mullen, Picking, McNeil and Aiden Watson, manager Walker of course may have a completely different view. Judging by the size of United's squad one could be excused for thinking they had discovered an unexpected supply of cash or been taken over by an investment bank. This of course has nothing to do with our headline, 'Merchant Bank', it in fact is meant to be 'rhyming slang' for 'lamb shank', yes Paul Muir, 'we remember you'! So come on United, let's shag those Lambegians!

First Blood!

Roy Walker has his first real test in front of the United home supporters in tomorrow night's friendly against a Glasgow Rangers select at the Showgrounds, kick-off 19-30. The United manager has quelled the mini-rebellion of team captain Albert Watson and Craig McClean and is looking forward to his first 'big' game in charge and to the ongoing task of 'whipping' the United squad into a team to be reckoned with. He must do so without new central defender Gavin McDonnell who is still on holiday, while Watson remains doubtful with a thigh strain. Gary Haveron, who deputised so ably alongside Aaron Stewart in last night's friendly against Chimney Corner, may have to continue in that role in tomorrow night's game. United as expected easily saw off the Corner, netting 7 goals without reply in the process, with Haveron scoring twice, one a trademark free kick and the other from the penalty spot while the new striking combination of Davitt Walsh and Neil Teggart also got two apiece, Gavin Melaugh got the other goal. Newcomer Joe McDonnell impressed alongside Melaugh in midfield, while Liam Hogan and Liam Mullen made their debut at leftback and left midfield respectively. Neil Blayney got his United career off to a good start between the sticks and it was great to see youngster Sean O'Neill, back to full fitness, taking over in the second half and distinguishing himself with a couple of good stops. Sky Blue Sport were surprised to read of the comments attributed to team Captain Albert Watson in the local papers as to his reasons for wanting to quit United. The 'Sport team have been assured by a United official that he had met Watson on two occasions over the summer as well as contacting him by phone, but the Sandy Row man had not alluded to his anxieties regarding his United future at any time. We at 'Sport hope there has been no 'illegal' contact from a well known 'bigot', when Watson attended a couple of friendly games recently involving a 'certain' dark blue team, but of course he (the bigot), is a stalwart of propriety and honesty and would not stoop to such underhand tactics! Enough of these fairy tales, it's now time to put out the rallying call for tomorrow night's game (tickets for which are still available), the home baptism for our new manager and hopefully a victory for the Sky Blues, so come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Ranger babes!

Crisp Management!

United have appointed their new manager, Roy Walker is the latest 'magician', who has been given the task of awakening the so called 'sleeping giant', that is United. Roy's first task was to appoint Scot's man Billy Sinclair as his first team coach, replacing Jeff Montgomery, who along with reserve team manager, David Dorian, has joined the 'Marty Quinn' revival mission at Clandeboye Park. His next task will, in our opinion, be a 'wee' bit harder, namely turning the 'under-achieving' Sky Blues into a challenging team. Surely it won't take someone as shrewd as the ex-Crues supremo long to realise that United are carrying far too much 'dead wood'. Garth Scates, Mark Picking and Stuarty King are three who are well past their 'sell by date'. While fullbacks McClean and Wray are still a long way behind Boydie and Carlisle, two legendary United fullbacks of the modern era. That's almost half of the United regular squad on match days and just shows the monumental task facing our new manager. The new season is just 9 short weeks away and rumours are rife that United may lose at least 2 of the better players in their present squad, so manager Walker needs to get on the ball almost immediately. Roy stated that he had to ask God's guidance before taking over the United manager's job, we assume he has received 'divine' assurance so hopefully he will now press on with the job. Only time will tell if Walker is the 'messiah' who will lead us to victory over the infidel (Coleraine, Linfield and Cliftonville, to name but three), hopefully he is and we can then 'prey' on our rivals this incoming season!

Roy Joy!

Just heard the news that Roy Walker has asked for time to seek an answer from 'God' (not David Jeffrey, we have been assured), as to whether he should take the Ballymena job. Is this the same God, who told Nathan McConnell not to sign for United, but also instructed him to elbow United keeper Paul Murphy during the 'infamous' leg of lamb riot. If so there can only be one of two outcomes, he will either (A), not take the job, or (B), he will take the job and carry on with the 'promises but no reward' policies of his predecessors, nobody (as has been well documented by those dear Coleraine fans), has delivered the goods since dear old Alex McKeee in '89. We at 'Sport have also heard that the best advertisement for Bushmills whiskey, Roy Coyle, has been linked with the job, it's bloody scary isn't it? Rumours that Roy Melchester (Roy of the Rovers), is a possible candidate have been denied by a United spokesman, while Rob Roy is refusing to rule himself out if he can find a new 'claymore', whatever that is. Despite huge scientific advances we have been assured that 'Roy Rogers' and his assistant 'Trigger', remain too dormant to even be considered. Rumours that Ronnie McFall (maybe he should change his name to Roy), is interested in the post, have not been confirmed by the United's board. Maybe the man favoured by most Sky Blue fans (Marty Quinn), there we've said it, will need to change his name by deed poll, if he is to be considered for the post. Might we suggest the name Roy McCoy, then he might be the real, 'McCoy', as far as we're concerned, these others are only pretenders!

Shoot Out!

United go into tomorrow's match with Newry City knowing that at least a point is required if they are to retain 6th place in the final league table. With that in mind it's hard to fathom why manager Tommy Wright would consider dropping 'Mister versatility', Gary Haveron, in order to play Garth Scates, or give youngster Paul McNeill a starting role alongside Kevin Kelbie, it's just mind boggling, but it has been rumoured to be correct. Young Paul, could and should've scored 3 goals last week at Drumaho and his promotion to a starting role is similar to our last trip to Newry for the Irish cup back in January, when Stuarty King missed 3 sitters and not only kept his place for the replay, but was given the task of dispatching the 1st penalty in the subsequent shoot out. Obviously our dream of seeing our 'wicked' strike force, of Wardy, Kevin and Davitt (WKD), is not going to materialise this season, so we will have to dream on. Tomorrow's game, in the opinion of the Sky Blue Sports crew like the Irish cup replay, is yet another shoot out and the winners will be rewarded with at worst a 6th place finish in this years league standings, the losers will have to go away and lick their wounds until battle recommences next August, in the new league set-up. It's hard to generate enthusiasm for this last fixture as the team have been 'going through the motions' for the last 6 games or so, but try we must. So for the last time this season, come on Sky Blues, let's once and for all, shag those 'border boys'!

Drumaho Demolition!

United go into tomorrow's penultimate match against Institute (hereafter known as 'Stute), with a full compliment of players (as far as we know that is). Our source (who cannot be named for legal reasons, he's a paid amateur, joke), has been sadly lacking recently even though we've been right occasionally, but surely our luck cannot continue, or can it? United manager Tommy Wright, who appears to favour giving youngster Paul McNeil a starting role tomorrow, needs to be reminded that his second top scorer, Davitt Walsh, also needs the reassurance of a starting role. Our sincere apologies to to team Captain Albert Watson, who received a plaque from our chairman after attaining 200 appearances for the club last Saturday, which we failed to mention, a rap on the knuckles for us. But what of tomorrow's team, that as they say, is the $64 question? Going on our performance of last week, 3 names spring to mind as automatic choices, Paul Murphy, goalscoring hero Tommy Wray and Aiden Watson. Gavin Melaugh looks certain to regain his place in midfield and if our manager decides to go with 3 strikers, hopefully it will be Garth Scates who misses out and not Gary Haveron. Of course we may be miles off in our thoughts, but one thing remains the same, our objective, in other words, we want to 'shag' every team we meet. So for the penultimate time, come on Sky Blues, let's shag those 'Stuteians'!

Scum Clearance!

United manager Tommy Wright goes into tomorrow's derby game against cup finalists Coleraine (there we've said it and that's an end to it), without the suspended Gavin Melaugh and reserve striker Randal Reid. Leading goalscorer Kevin Kelby also faces a late fitness test on his injured calf, which is yet another 'bad news item' for the Sky Blues. The one piece of 'good news' is that 'lamb bones' are not only 'fit', but on offer in local butchers (now we did say 'offer' not 'offal') at B.O.G.O.F. All joking aside, this is a game that United must win, not only is it their last home game of this season, it's also against their biggest rivals and the result is vitally important to every United fan. Any of United's players who are intent on staying on at the Showgrounds had best be prepared to give 110% tomorrow, or he'll think that the reception at the end of the Distillery game, was a picnic. United must travel for their last two games to the farthest ends of our wee country, first to the North to Drumahoe, on the fringes of Londonderry and not a kick in the arse off the Donegal border and secondly South to Newry on the edge of the Louth border. A defeat tomorrow could herald the lowest travelling Sky Blue support for many years, for these two irrelevant fixtures. So Sky Blues it's up to you, tomorrow is the 'last chance saloon' for a fair number of you, it's time to stand up and be counted, so come on United, let's shag that Coleraine scum!

Friday, 4 April 2008

Three Strikes!

Strong rumours emanating from the Showgrounds suggest that Stuarty King has been dropped and at long last United will take the field with three strikers, we at 'Sport will believe it when we see it. United's opponents tomorrow, Donegal Celtic, will be no pushover as they are fighting for their existence in the top league. Having said that a win tomorrow is vital for the Sky Blues, firstly it will ensure at worst a 9th place finish in the league and secondly it will prove a timely boost before the visit of the cup finalists (there we've said it and it was bloody hard we can tell you), next Saturday. There are reports that Kevin Kelbie faces a fitness test, but we have been assured that Aiden Watson and 17 year-old David Cushley will definitely start. Does this mean that if Kelby is fit, United will start with their 'wicked' formation, Wardy, Kevin and Davitt, or is manager Wright intending to play Cushley as a striker, thereby 'hedging' his bets (by the way that is not a subtle tip for the Grand National). If Cushley is used as a striker, a place could be found in the midfield for the versatile Gary Haveron, unless of course our manager is intent on shipping him out also, which seems a possibility. In Baseball parlance it's 'three strikes and you're out' and that could be the fate awaiting this United team and their manager, if thing go pear shaped tomorrow and the one thing they should all realise by now is we don't suffer fools gladly. But enough of this 'gloom and doom', let's be optimistic, surely after those two pathetic away defeats, we can bounce back with some home comforts in our penultimate home match of this season. So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Suffolk ewes!

Party's Over!

After the draw with Lisburn Distillery last Saturday, a fourth place finish in the league was looking remote and then after Tuesday's surrender at Larne, even a sixth place finish is now in doubt. That means that in tomorrow night's rearranged game a Limavady, kick-off 8pm, a win is vital for the Sky Blues. Craig McClean and Simon Kelly are available after their one game bans, but what the rest of the team might be is anyone's guess. Surely the time has come for the United manager to root out the 'dead wood', players who under-perform, week in and week out, or is he happy with the situation? United's fans demonstrated last Saturday that they have 100% commitment to the cause, it's just a pity that the players don't feel the same. We are in a hole at the moment and the only way out is for our players to start playing as if their lives depended on it and for many of them their future at the club is none too certain. We at 'Sport still believe that with a professional approach, we can still at worst consolidate 6th place, but as the old saying goes, 'the buck stops here'! So come on United, let's show all your loyal fans what you can do, in short, let's shag those Roesiders!

Lamb Shank!

How many missiles were thrown in the boisterous fracas at the Showgrounds on Saturday? We counted three, a folding chair, a lamb shank (wrapped in cellophane for hygiene's sake, well we don't know where them Distillery boys have been) and 'allegedly', a £2 coin. There was also the odd punch thrown, but a 'riot' it was not, in fact there was many a worse scrap at the 'hop' in the old Peoples Club on any Saturday night in the 'good old days' (the sixties). All the papers say the trouble only started in the last few minutes of the game, we at 'Sport disagree, it all began as far as we are concerned when referee Mark Courtenay cautioned Whites goalkeeper Phillip Matthews for a professional foul on United's Mark Ward, instead of the 'mandatory' red card, five minutes before halftime. But enough about Saturday lets concentrate on tomorrow's game against the 'Harbour Rats' at Inver Park. With Craig McClean and Simon Kelly serving automatic one game bans, it means a recall for Larne man Gary Haveron and Cullybackey man Nigel Boyd. Boydie will be making his 380th appearance for the Sky Blues tomorrow and we at 'Sport are delighted to see him back in the first team. The rest of the United team should be the starting line-up from Saturday, which means an immediate return for United hero Paul Murphy, who has recovered from having Darren Armour stamp on his hand and (born again Christian) Nathan McConnell's vicious elbow, to take his place between the posts. The man who filled in for him last Saturday during the prolonged stoppage time, Kevin Kelbie, makes his 100th appearance for the club and will no doubt be looking to score his 51st goal in the process. Kevin has averaged a goal every two games during his time at the Showgrounds and with a bit more support there's no reason why he can't get even better. Three points tomorrow are vital, we would hate for it to be us who put a nail in the Larne 'coffin', but we must set those thoughts aside and take all three points. Its not going to be easy, but with the right attitude (or should that be the 'Wright' attitude), there's no reason why we can't prevail. So come on Sky Blues, lets shank (sorry), lets shag, those Harbour Rats!

Wicked Side!

The time has come for United to show their 'wicked side' in tomorrow's crunch match against Lisburn Distillery. United have the men to do it on their side, if only our manager Tommy Wright has the courage to use them. Our WKD are our three strikers, Wardy, Kevin and Davitt and we at 'Sport believe if our manager has the courage to play them all in his starting line-up tomorrow, then victory will be ours. For a start it's the last thing Whites manager Paul Kirk will expect and that may be enough to tip the balance in our favour. Team captain Albert Watson should return after suspension to partner Simon Kelly in central defence, which in turn will release Gary Haveron to reclaim his left midfield role. With Wray and McClean holding down the fullback slots, the United manager just has to decide who gets the nod in central midfield. This comes down to a case of any two from three, with Melaugh, Scates and Aiden Watson being the contestants. This starting line-up would mean no place for last week's unlikely hero Stuarty King, but its a matter of 'horses for courses' as the United manager tries to out guess his opposite number, Paul Kirk. Stuarty King and other United fringe players will no doubt figure in United's other two games in this 6 day period, away to Larne on Easter Monday and at Limavady next Friday night. First though we need 3 points tomorrow, let's be 'Easter Risers' and not 'Easter Bunnies', so come on United, let's shag those lambeggars!

Friday, 14 March 2008

Tough Task!

As we trail Lisburn Distillery by 12 points, it looks like 4th place is beyond us and in fact with Newry winning tonight we now find ourselves in a 5 team fight to hold onto 6th place. Losing to Dungannon Swifts in our last game proved quite costly and we can ill afford any more slip-ups. Tomorrow's game is a potential banana skin, with Armagh City fighting for their existence in the new Premier league set-up. United go into the game minus captain Albert Watson, who must sit this one out due to a one game suspension. The good news is that new signing Mark Ward is available for selection and surely it's high time the United manager gave his three strikers, Kelby, Walsh & Ward, a chance to show what they can do and what better game to do it in than tomorrow's game against the 'apple pickers'. Never let it be said that Sky Blue Sport tried to influence a United manager, but surely Stuarty King is long overdue a rest and who better to take his place than the 'most exciting 17 year-old in Ireland', David Cushley. Cushley's skill and enthusiasm are just what United need to drive them on for the remainder of the season. Three points tomorrow is vital and that will set us up for the Easter egg encounter with Lisburn Distillery next Saturday, so come on Sky Blues, let's shag those apple pickers!

Friday, 7 March 2008

Stock Taking!

Tomorrow seems like as good a time as any for United fans to pass judgement on the managerial success of Tommy Wright. United have a less than enviable record at Limavady, so if they can somehow conjure an away win, would that be an indication that big Tam is the right man for the Shogrounds job? With the 4th spot in the Setanta cup now going to either the "Scum" or Donegal Celtic, United must finish no lower than 3rd in the league. With that in mind a win tomorrow is vital and in fact a winning run from now until the end of the season is the least we need. Gary Haveron looks set to get a recall in the absence of Captain Albert Watson, who must serve an automatic suspension. Will the manager be bold enough to introduce youngsters Stephen Lowry and Daviv Cushley or will he stick with the "old guard" that has put us in our present prediciament. Surely the time has come for big Tam to take drastic measures, go with youth, we have after all nothing to lose and almost everything to gain!

Bloody Boring!

Bruce Balmer, the 'lucky sod', has taken himself off for a fortnight in the sun, while Omar is heading off on Sunday also to warmer climes. All this means is that there will be no match report next week, although I will endeavour to keep any avid Sky Blue Sport fan (if such an animal exists, which I doubt), informed of any developments and Omar, if sober (highly unlikely), promises to write his normal diatribe (I personally will believe it when I see it), from afar. This apathy that has gripped the 'Sport team is typical of the 'apathy' that has gripped our team and fans. So much in fact that you feel you could predict the next headline, United lose to Limavady, conceding two goals in as many minutes and former player Paul Brown gets at least one of the goals. Last weeks display at Stangmore Park (or the synagogue to give it it's proper title), was pretty abject and even when we were leading one nil, we were as nervous as kittens. With no match this week, I am at a loss as to what to do with myself and as the weather is not too promising it looks like a I'll be sitting in the heat having a few bevvies and hoping Institute can overcome the 'scum', but somehow I doubt they will. On our way to last week's game we were discussing where we thought we might finish in the league this season, Omar the eternal optimist reckoned 4th was still a possibility, I plumped for 6th while Brucie said 8th or maybe even 9th as last season, after the match it was hard to argue with Bruce's prediction. But it's not all doom and gloom, yet another player has turned down a move to Windsor Park and that has to be good for the local clubs as it was beginning to look as if the 'bigoted' David Jeffrey just had to snap his fingers and players signed up , 'willy nilly'! Maybe Linfield have become the poor payers of the league, or is it just that there's no room for anybody as Jeffrey's ego is so big they just can't breathe, whatever it is, long may it contnue!

Starting Over!

When United beat Portadown 2-1 at home on Saturday October 27, they began an unbeaten run which propelled them to fourth in the league, then it was a case of starting over. After our humiliating defeat to Linfield last week, mostly at our own hands it must be said, we are in need of yet another resurrection tomorrow when we visit Stangmore Park to play Dungannon Swifts. United's record against the Swifts on their own ground isn't too encouraging, in fact one could see a case for renaming the ground the Synagogue, as it's almost impossible to get anything out of it. But the Sky Blues will have to ignore all those negative thoughts tomorrow and go grind out a result. Hopefully United manager Tommy Wright will abandon any negative thoughts from his mind too and return to the 4,4,2, formation, which should see Davitt Walsh and Kevin Kelbie spearhead the United attack. United Captain Albert Watson, who signed an extension to his contract this week which will keep him at the Showgrounds until 2010, will we believe partner Dean Pooley at the centre of defence and the only back four position under threat would seem to be Swifts old boy Tommy Wray, who has not been delivering the goods of late. We also wonder if the United manager will restore 'live wire' Stephen Lowry to the number 7 shirt and Gary Haveron to left midfield, both of them have been badly missed over the last few weeks. Will the fit again Aiden Watson have to settle for a place on the bench, or will the manager give him the nod in place of Scatesy who hasn't been performing too well lately either. A rumour is abounding that Mike Ward may have recovered sufficiently to take his place on the bench which will give the United manager plenty of options. So it's all systems go for a new beginning, come on United, let's shag those Tyronians!

First Final!

With two thirds of the league programme elapsed, the Sky Blues are facing 10 prospective cup finals from now to the end of April. We have so far taken 34 points from 20 games, 16 from the first 10 and 18 from the second 10, we at 'Sport figure we need at least 20 from these last 10 games. Not an impossible task by any means, but we think we are in need of something from tomorrow's game and that won't be easy. United did manage a couple of draws against the 'Blues' last season, but Linfield are fighting for the league title now with Cliftonville and trail the North Belfast team by 3 points and will be determined to avoid the widening of that gap. United, for almost the first time this season have a full panel to select from, but new signing Mike Ward may well be given another week to overcome a niggling hamstring injury. United's other new signing, Dean Pooley looks set to partner Albert Watson in central defence, while Simon Kelly, who has just signed an extension to his contract will slot in just in front of the central defenders. With the rest of the United team expected to be that which started the game at Shamrock Park two weeks ago, that means Gary Haveron will have to settle for a seat on the bench. Competition for places on the bench should be quite keen, with Aiden Watson back to full fitness, that leaves four players vying for 3 slots. No doubt it's an enviable situation to be in, but the United manager will have to get his selection just right, leaving himself well covered for any potential injuries. Whatever panel is selected, let's hope they are up for the game, let's send those townies back home to their caravans pointless, come on United, let's shag those villagers!

Derry Scarey!

We start our column tonight with an apology, because of indecision by the Sky Blue management, we have no match this Saturday, as we are out of the Irish cup. We do however have a 'friendly' match on Friday night in Londonderry against League of Ireland side Derry City. We use the word 'friendly' in its loosest form, as anyone with any knowledge of United/Derry City games would realise, they're are anything but friendly. United manager Tommy Wright wants to give new signing Dean Pooley a game, as he would like him to play alongside team Captain Albert Watson, with a view of selecting him for our next competitive game at home to Linfield. Tommy may also give a run-out to someone he hopes to sign in the summer, who that is we don't know, but the manager has assured us its not Paul Brown, but was non committal on Kevin Ramsey. We are just teasing here of course, or at least we hope so. Omar's column will return next week, he's taking a break at the moment, but will return refreshed prior to the game against Linfield. At the moment his voice has disappeared as he lost it at the Norn Iron game on Wednesday night, but we wish him a speedy recovery. Hopefully the Sky Blues will return relatively unscathed from their journey into the heart of the Bogside and with their buses still in pristine condition. Don't worry about the result lads, just get in and out as quietly as possible, you know it makes sense!

Defender Dean!

Dean Pooley a 21 year-old central defender has signed for Ballymena until the end of the season, with an option to extend his time. Englishman Dean, whose former clubs include Millwall and who played for Bohemians last season, gives United manager Tommy Wright a bit more defensive cover, following the departure of Johnny Flynn and to a lesser extent, Aaron Callaghan. Another factor which prompted the United manager to act was the failure of team Captain Albert Watson to sign an extension to his existing contract and it looks increasingly likely that the Whitehead man will leave United in the close season for pastures new (Windsor Park by all accounts). The United manager is hopeful that International clearance will come in time for Dean to get a place on the subs bench in tomorrow night's league encounter at Shamrock Park, against Portadown, kick-off 19-45. As to the United line-up for tomorrow night's game, it's anybody's guess, but must surely mean a return to the 4,5,1 formation which had served us so well, with Gary Haveron earning a recall to midfield, where his battling skills were badly missed in the United engine room last week at Solitude. Mike Ward's injury sustained early on in the Reds game, is not as serious as at first thought, but we believe the United manager will allow the player at least another week of rest and then give him a reserve game before the visit of Linfield in a fortnights time. Out of favour Stephen Lowry may earn a recall to the United bench, or maybe even a starting role, after scoring twice for the reserves last weekend. With an Englishman, a Scotsman and a couple of Irishmen in their ranks, we just need a 'Taffe' now to complete the set. One thing though that is sadly missing from the United ranks, is a born and bred Ballymena native, they, as they say, are as 'scarce as hens teeth'. Still nobody or no team's perfect and we'll just have to run with the guys we have and we need to get a result tomorrow night. Portadown will be a tough nut to crack, as they suffered the same heartbreak as ourselves in their last game, losing in the last minute at Solitude. But nonetheless it's all systems go for the Sky Blues, so come on United, let's shaft those Shamrocks!

Red Wreckers!

Cliftonville are unbeaten in the league this season, while United haven't lost a league game since they played Linfield on Saturday October 20. With that in mind the safe 'bet' for tomorrow's game is a draw, but then again a draw isn't much good for the home team, so maybe it's our turn to put one over on them. On our last two meetings the results could have gone either way, but the Reds just sneaked it by the odd goal, tomorrow would be a good time for us to reverse that trend. Now that Davitt Walsh has agreed to a new contract that will keep him at the Showgrounds for two and a half more years, might our manager think of going back to a 4,4,2, formation and playing Walsh and Kelbie in a twin striking role. The 4,5,1, tactic used in the last 2 months has proved effective, but it is at the end of the day a negative approach and it puts pressure on our players to put the chances away, which let's face it, we haven't been doing in our last four games, three draws and a penalty shoot-out loss bear testament to that fact. We at 'Sport are also of the opinion that Stuarty King is in need of a rest and we have after all got the most 'exciting' 17 year-old in Ireland available to take his place (our manager's words, not ours). Mike Ward should get another run out in right midfield, with the instruction to support the front two at every opportunity, while our centre midfield partnership should be Melaugh and Haveron, which means a place on the bench for Garth Scates, the back four of Wray, McClean, Watson and Kelly are all automatic choices. With this formation we think there'd be no stopping us, so come on Tommy, let's go shag those Chickens, North, South,East or West, Sky Blue football is the best!

Johnny's Jackpot!

United's 18 year-old central defender, Johnny Flynn passed his medical today and has signed a three and a half year contract with English Premier league side, Blackburn Rovers. The west Belfast youngster, who starred for United's reserve team last season during their first ever championship success, has already made 14 first team appearances and has helped United chalk up 14 unbeaten games. Young Johnny has to be commended for his attitude, yes he is full of raw natural talent, but it's his attitude that has been apparent since moving up to the first team, as he takes everything on the chin and just gets on with the job in hand. We at 'Sport wish Johnny well, we know he'll do us proud and if we don't get to say goodbye tomorrow night, 'we know we'll meet again some sunny day'! Speaking of tomorrow night's game, with manager Wright accompanying young Johnny to Blackburn (a nice gesture from the United manager), we are unsure of what the United team might be for the cup replay. In fact given the torrential downpour which has ensued today, we cannot be sure that the game will even take place. United ended the game on Saturday with 3 strikers on the pitch and we are left to wonder if our manager would favour starting the game with 2 strikers at least, in a bid to secure the tie. Davitt Walsh came off the bench to score the equaliser on Saturday and notch his 11th goal of the season from 16 appearances, 5 as sub, an incredible scoring ratio. Even though the Letterkenny man has as yet not signed a contract for the Sky Blues, he surely must've got Tommy Wright's attention. New signing Mike Ward must also have given the manager food for thought, as he made a positive start and it was his shot, pushed onto the bar by the Crues keeper, that led to United's first goal and there were those of us in the ground who thought it had crossed the line anyway. Barring any serious injuries we would expect United to start along similar lines, as on Saturday, but maybe with the versatile Ward or Walsh in place of the disappointing Fitzy. Whatever line-up takes the field, we just hope they haven't been too distracted by recent events, let's go and finish the job lads, let's shag those marshies!

Gary's Ton!

Larne man Gary Haveron, in only his third season at the Showgrounds has already notched up a hundred appearances for the club and has become a vital cog in the United machine. United's next 3 league games will have a big bearing on their season, at home to the Crues tomorrow and then a double header away to the so far unbeaten Cliftonville and Portadown. At this stage last season United had gleaned 22 points from their 17 games and were in 9th position and that's exactly the position they finished in last season. This season after 17 games we have 33 points and are in fourth position, a vast improvement, but if we are to finish at worst in the top four this term, these next three league games may well prove crucial, at least in our opinion anyway. We don't have a 'baldy' as to the make-up of the team for tomorrow's game and would never try to second guess the United manager, but have a feeling they'll be few changes from the team that earned a draw away to Newry City in the Irish cup last Saturday. Even if team Captain Albert Watson makes a 'miraculous' recovery from the 'mystery bug' that has laid him low for the last 2 weeks, we expect Simon Kelly to retain the number 5 shirt for tomorrow's game. This should also mean Gary Haveron will retain the Captain's armband for his 101 appearance, which is a small tribute to his professionalism and 'never say die' attitude, especially when he found himself out of favour with the United manager. Gary has never given anything less than 100% commitment and is now reaping the rewards of his, at times 'herculean' efforts, we at 'Sport would just like to say, 'long may it continue'. So come on United, let's teach those boys from Tiger's bay a few manners, in short, let's shag those Townies'!

Second Chance!

United have a second chance to progress into the next round of the Irish cup at home to Newry City tomorrow night, kick-off 7-45. This in our opinion, is a game that shouldn't have been necessary given the many chances United in general and Stuarty King in particular, missed at Newry last Saturday. History is not on our side either as we've lost Irish cup replays in the last two seasons after 'missing' our chances in the first games. But win it we must and we will, surprise! surprise! have to do it without team Captain Albert Watson, who has cried off once more. Are we at 'Sport the only people who detect 'skulduggery' at work here? Albert missed the Glenavon match due to a back injury and now he has missed two cup games due to a mysterious 'chest infection', or is it a fear of being cup-tied? United manager Tommy Wright believes the United Captain to be genuine and we reluctantly must accept his statement too, but we still have a nagging doubt. As for tomorrow night's line-up, barring injuries only one change is envisaged with Garth Scates returning after serving a one match suspension, with Lee Patrick expected to lose out. Davitt Walsh, still hasn't signed a new contract and may make way for new signing Michael Ward on the United subs bench. With Mickey Collins back in the Newry team, United can expect another physical game and we hope that referee Davey Malcolm takes a firmer grip than he did in the first game. The ball is in our court and it's up to us to go on and win the tie and win it we can as we'll have a starting 11 who all want to play for the Sky Blues and that's as it should be, so come on United, let's shag those 'boys' from the Marshes!

Emergency Ward!

We just heard the news that United have signed former Dungannon Swifts midfielder/striker Michael Ward from Glentoran. We are at a loss to understand our managers thinking re-this signing, as Ward has played mostly on the right side of midfield for the Glens and we have an abundance of talent vying for that spot already. But then again. none of the Sky Blue team have ever won, or come close to winning, a 'manager of the month' award, so we have to hope our manager knows what he is doing. United have reportedly got a full squad of fit players for tomorrow's Irish cup game away to Newry City. The one player missing from the squad is Garth Scates, who must serve an automatic one match ban, having reached the dreaded penalty points mark. Having no knowledge of the United manager's thoughts we can only surmise and speculate on his possible starting line-up. With Albert Watson fully fit again (we cannot possibly comment on reports that he emptied his wallet), Gary Haveron should be released from defensive duties and we expect him to slot into Scates place in midfield. The United manager, we think, will stick with a five man midfield, so that should mean a place on the bench for Davitt Walsh. The downside of this formation leaves top scorer Kevin Kelbie ploughing a lone furrow up front and we believe United require the pace and guile of David Cushley and Stephen Lowry on the flanks to compliment the Scottish striker. This would be harsh on Stuarty King, who has played a vital part in United's last four games, but when the going gets tough, then it's time to make tough decisions. So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Marshmen', let's begin another epic journey!

Tommy'll Tarry!

Sky Blue Sport would like to knock in the head all this speculation about United manager Tommy Wright considering a move to Norwich City as goalkeeper coach. Hasn't the Ballyclare man come home to be close to his family and friends? So there's no reason for him to consider a coaching job, which let's face it as precarious a job as you can find. A new manager comes to the team and the first thing he does is get rid of the coaching staff of the former manager. Now if he had been offered the 'manager's' job that might have given him food for thought, but that is somewhere in the future. As for tomorrow's game at home to manager-less Glenavon, we haven't been unable to ascertain any team news, so we'll just have to speculate once more. With a clean bill of health, no injuries as far as we know, we at 'Sport expect the victorious starting eleven from the win at the Oval on new Year's Day, to be given the nod. Having said that the manager may want to revert to a 4,4,2, formation, bringing in Walsh, which would mean someone stepping down. The favourite, in our humble opinion would be Mark Picking, as he wasn't at his best on Tuesday or maybe the manager will restore Stephen Lowry, who came on as a sub to such a devastating effect on Tuesday, splitting the Glens defence to set up Kelbie for United's fourth goal. Whatever permutation Big Tam settles for United need to do a professional job and maintain their present winning run. Surely Glenavon and their caretaker manager, former United boss Alan Fraser, would take great pleasure in ending the sequence. But with an Irish Cup match away to Newry up next, United must be favourites to take all three points tomorrow. So come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Lurgan layabouts and maintain our league position, we know you can do it, so prove it!
