Hulk targeted by Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has hinted that Porto striker Hulk could be one of his top summer transfer targets.
The Brazilian, 25, who has a £84m release clause, helped Porto win four trophies for Villas-Boas last term.
The Blues may need to bolster their attack with Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou out of contract in the summer.
"I see room for an explosive player on the wing, someone who is strong in one-on-one situations and Hulk fits that profile," said Villas-Boas.
"We have Kalou and Florent Malouda, both of whom are nearing the end of their contracts, while Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge are the future.
"As such, there will surely be a place to fill."
Under-fire Villas-Boas has also admitted for the first time that he does wonder if he will be sacked by Blues owner Roman Abramovich in the same way as four of his six predecessors, Claudio Ranieri, Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari and even Carlo Ancelotti.
Ancelotti won a Premier League and FA Cup double in his first season at Stamford Bridge before being sacked last May after a trophyless second campaign.
The Italian was replaced by Villas-Boas, who cost Chelsea £13.3m in compensation for his services.
Villas-Boas has endured a difficult start to his Blues reign after admitting that some of his players do not back his "project".
The 34-year-old has previously insisted that he retains the full support of Russian billionaire Abramovich.
But he told Portugal's TSF radio station: "We are now in the exact same moment as last year. It is an exact copy.
"I think I have felt the confidence from Abramovich. But the pattern of behaviour of the owner has led to a downfall in similar situations or even 'better' situations.
"What will be the reaction? It will be one of the two.
"A continuation of the project and full support or just the cultural pattern that has happened before. We don't know."

Mourning Time!

For those who think Cutch is the best thing since sliced bread, he dropped 'the bombshell' this week, that we forecast way back in December. In short after two seasons and becoming legendary, he'd rather be a villain than a hero. But if you think about he never rests too long at any club, maybe he has a different agenda than most players, that's to play for as many clubs as he can. If you count two stints in Portadown, Crusaders will be his 12th club in a 15 year career, not exactly renowned for sticking is he. We can't help thinking that he was bound for Glentoran but when the 'born again hypocrite' didn't get the job he opted for the Crues. But the question remains is he really interested in playing his heart out for us until the end of the season or merely going through the motions as he has done for the last two months.

Spike has a decision to make, can he afford to play him, knowing when the 'chips are down' he might not deliver, or is it best to come to some agreement with him and let him spend the rest of season packing cheese. Spike's predecessor took the drastic action of ousting the two men who signed pre-contracts last year and we admit we admired him for that, but it probably came back to haunt us in the long run. If by some miracle we got through to the Irish cup semi-final and drew the Crues, could we be sure of Cutch putting in a real effort, we think not. Who among United supporters will ever forget Richard Gibson's glaring miss at the Oval last December and could we be sure if faced with the same scenario Cutch wouldn't do the same.

But wait there's a match to be won at Mourneview against Glenavon, who are fighting to hang on their premier status and although Donegal Celtic done them a favour defeating Carrick Rangers tonight, they'll be anxious to do themselves proud. Spike and the two baldies are down to the bare bones and we can't afford anymore injuries and we believe it will be the same again in selection, bearing in mind the Cutch dilemma. It might be an idea to start young Neil Lowry or Jamie Davidson and leave Cutch on the bench. It's not known if midfielder Alan Davidson is going to make the panel tomorrow, but if he does he'll give us another option and we need plenty of options. We play the 2nd of our six pointers tomorrow, win and we've taken another step to securing our premier league status, lose and it's squeaky bums time. So Come United, live up to your name, let's shag those Mourne Viewers!

Bundesliga - Rummenigge warns Bayern over treble hunt

Bayern Munich's bid to become the first German club to clinch a treble hung in the balance after their surprise 1-0 defeat at Basel in their Champions League round-of-16 first leg.
The Bavarians, who have dropped to third in the Bundesliga after last week's 0-0 draw at bottom-placed Freiburg, conceded an 86th-minute goal after missing a string of clear chances against the Swiss.
"We need to wake up. We have reached a critical moment in the season for us now," Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told his players at the club's traditional post-game dinner in the early hours of Thursday.
"You must now play aggressively and pull the old adage of 'all for one and one for all' out of the magic hat, and it all starts this Sunday, gentlemen.
"We must turn this corner quickly," he said. "We must all work together to pull ourselves out of this mess that we played ourselves into."
Bayern's world was still in order until the winter break, having advanced in the Champions League and the German Cup while also leading the Bundesliga.
In an erratic start to the year, however, they have won only two of their five league games as champions Borussia Dortmund gradually pulled away at the top.
"We had wonderful times earlier this season. We had a good Christmas but we are worried and concerned with what has happened since then," Rummenigge said.
The defeat in Switzerland means the Germans need to beat Basel, who also defeated Manchester United in this season's competition, by at least two goals on March 13 in Munich to advance in 90 minutes.
Any other result would mean them missing out on the biggest European club prize in a year when the final is held in Munich in May.
"I think a 1-0 result is one that still gives us chances to progress," said Bayern chairman Uli Hoeness. "I am not at all concerned that we might not make it in the return leg but we need to bring peace and quiet back into the club."
It would not be the first time Bayern had pulled themselves from the brink of elimination.
After being written off, the four-time winners won their last two Champions League group games in the 2009/10 season and eventually reached the competition's final.
Any slip-up against in-form Schalke 04 in the league on Sunday, however, will further increase pressure on Jupp Heynckes's team with their aura of invincibility from earlier this season long punctured.
"We had imagined it differently," said Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer, who pulled off several spectacular saves to deny the Swiss before Valentin Stocker's late strike.
"We are stuck in a difficult situation and in this phase we had imagined our game to be different. We must turn things around now," Neuer added.

Serie A - Ferguson: Giggs eclipses Maldini

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson believes Ryan Giggs's astonishing career even eclipses that of AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini.
The evergreen Manchester United man will be making his 900th appearance if he plays some part in Thursday night's Europa League last-32 encounter with Ajax at Old Trafford.
Few come close to being such a star performer, at such a high level, for such a long time. The immediate comparison is with Maldini. His first-team career with AC Milan spanned 24 years and he also made 900 appearances; 902 to be exact, before he quit, in 2009, a month before his 41st birthday.
Yet even there Ferguson feels there is a subtle difference, saying: "Obviously Maldini was a magnificent player but there is a distinction. He was a defender and although in his case, he probably put in a lot of running as a full-back, wide players have more work to do.
"It is amazing really. If you go back to Moscow, you are talking almost another 150 games further on.
"He keeps defying age. This season he has just been the same as he was back in Moscow. There is nothing changed from his performance level then as it is today."

Football transfer rumours: Arsenal to sign Podolski and Hoilett?

Today's Mill has never sat watching Dave in its underpants. Never.

One particular type of transfer dominates the headlines on this sunny Monday morning – the potential switch of several men from managerial hotseats, where they steer their clubs' destiny in domestic and European football, to the settee at home, where they watch Dave. In their underpants.
Two men who could be swapping the technical area for the increasingly pronounced bottom-shaped groove in their favourite piece of furniture are Arsène Wenger and André Villas-Boas, who look to be on thinner ice than a couple of sweaty polar bears. Or perhaps not, in the case of the Arsenal manager. His job is safe for another two years, according to the tabloids. Well, TWO YEARS, to be more precise, although the Mill always likes to think we're above such shameless captilisation. We're not, obviously, but we do like to think it.
In the summer Wenger will be handed either a £50m warchest or a £55m warchest, which considering he spent something similar to those amounts last summer won't be much comfort to Arsenal fans. That £50m or £55m will go on Lukas Podolski, Junior Hoilett, Matías Suárez andMario Götze, although saving a decent chunk of it for Robin van Persie's wages might not be a bad idea either.
Villas-Boas is not so fortunate though. No warchests or summer transfer hitlists for him. If his Chelsea side lose against Napoli in the Champions League this week then "the axe will fall", according to the Sun.
One man looking to swap those afternoons watching Top Gear reruns, where the day's highlight is happening across The Big Match on ITV4 at some point in the late morning, lunch consists of baked beans on average five times a week and a wander down to the charity bookshop is seen as something of an accomplishment for the cut-and-thrust of Premier League management is Roy Keane. He's jumped to the top ofWolves' wanted list – but only because Steve Bruce wants long-term commitment rather than a brief fling until the end of the season.
And last but not least, Notts County want Keith Curle (he of the ever-popular Sweets XI: Keith Curleywurley, Scott Mintoes, Haribo West, Carlton Palma Violets etc and so forth) to replace the departed Martin Allen, who got the chop at the weekend. And in the day's least interesting coaching news, Neil Warnock's first signing at Leeds will be Ronnie Jepson.
In actual transfer tittle-tattle, Tottenham and Paris St-Germain wantInternacional's Leandro Damião. "I am not aware of Paris SG," said the striker, showing a real lack of knowledge of Ligue 1 football. "All that I know is that Tottenham have made an offer."
Robbie Keane will profess his lifelong love of Aston Villa in the summer when he rejoins from LA Galaxy and Liverpool have takenPortsmouth's England Under-17s captain Sam Magri on trial.

Ibrahimovic: RVP should quit Arsenal

AC Milan's Zlatan Ibrahimovic advises Robin Van Persie to leave when he is at the top of his game instead of carrying the hopes of an ailing Arsenal side.

Ibrahimovic has been one of the most nomadic forwards in the modern game. But he is also an astute player as each of his transfers has only brought the striker greater success.
The forward has won a league title each year for the past eight years during which he donned the jerseys of Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona and AC Milan. With Milan a point ahead of Juventus having played an extra game, many observers are already predicting that the Swede will achieve a ninth consecutive league title this year.
So he advised his counterpart to understand the only motivation that should matter to a footballer: Success.
"When you don't win anything for years, people understand why you leave like Cesc Fabregas," Ibrahimovic told The Sun.
"Football is all about winning. If you don't win you want to go.
Van Persie has been in sensational form this year and leads the Premier League's goalscoring charts having scored 22 goals. He is singlehandedly keeping Arsenal's hopes of achieving qualification for the Champions League alive.
The Swedish international added: "I don't know Robin personally but I remember him from Holland and what a talent he was - now he is complete.
"I don't know what he is thinking but I know what I would do.
"I have made a lot of moves in my life - I take it as a challenge, an adventure.
"But if you stay in one place all your life it is easy to play football. But if you move to five different places it is a real test.
"If you succeed that's when you become a real champion, that's when you get more respect."
Arsenal play Sunderland in the FA Cup Fifth Round on Saturday with the domestic tournament probably the only chance for the Dutchman to attain silverware this season.
Van Persie has one year left on his contract after the end of the current season and recent rumours have linked him with moves to Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Becks backs Redknapp for England

David Beckham believes Harry Redknapp would be a worthy choice to take over as England manager and has all the right credentials for the role.
Tottenham manager Redknapp has been installed as hot favourite to succeed Fabio Capello after the Italian stepped down last week over the John Terry captaincy affair.
LA Galaxy midfielder and former England captain Beckham, who trained with Spurs during the Major League Soccer off-season, believes the 64-year-old would be the perfect fit.
"Harry is a great man, a great manager. His man-management is incredible," said the ex-Manchester United ace.
"I've known players that have played under him, I've trained under him and he's not just a great manager but a great person as well."
Capello chose to resign after the Football Association stripped Terry of the England armband without consulting the Italian manager.
The Chelsea defender, who was poised to lead England at this summer's European Championship, will stand trial in the summer for allegedly racially abusing QPR stopper Anton Ferdinand, a charge Terry denies.
Asked whether the captaincy should be decided by the coach or the FA, Beckham gave his backing to the manager.
"Coach's call," he replied. "That's always the case.
"Obviously the decision was taken to take the captaincy away from John but going forward I'm sure the captain will be picked by whatever manager steps in."

Mario Goetze's agent confirms Man Utd interest

Mario Goetze's agent has revealed that Manchester United have made contact over the Borussia Dortmund playmaker.

The 19-year-old is a target for many of Europe's elite clubs, with Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid and several sides in Italy also believed to be keen on signing the teenager this year.

But according to Dirk Hebel, United are the only Premier League side to have made contact about a deal for his client.

Hebel told calciomercato.com: "I think in Europe all the top clubs are interested in Mario.

"I can confirm that I have had contact with Juventus and Manchester United, but not only them.

"I don't know if he'll go away after this season, you should ask Borussia. But I think that they will not let him leave for less than 40million euros.

"He still is very happy at Dortmund, though now he is injured."

Dortmund last month agreed a deal to sign Marco Reus from Borussia Monchengladbach. The playmaker, who has agreed a five-year contract and will move at the end of the season, is widely seen as a replacement for Goetze, who is under contract until 2014.

Squeaky Bums!

Yes its squeaky bums time once again and the next two matches against Carrick Rangers tomorrow night and Glenavon on Saturday the 25th will go a long way to defining the rest of our season. Four points from these two games would do very nicely, but they'll be tough games and tough points to get. Lose these two games and it really will be panic times at the Showgrounds and with the news that Jordan Baker jaw has been broken, United will have to do with only two fit strikers for the foreseeable future. There's a lot talk about Cutch going around at the moment, how he's not showing the form he showed earlier in the season. We agree, but we know every striker goes through a bad spell and hopefully Cutch's bad spell is about to end.

With Kane, Taggart and Taylor available for selection we expect to see them in the team at the expense of Woods, Archie and the injured Sparky. We would also like to see Rory and young Lowry in the team and surely Ally must come into the reckoning as well. But Spike seems to have a liking for Conor Downey, so it will be interesting to see who he selects to start. Carrick will be fighting for their very existence and it's sure to a tough match to call, but if United get going they should have too much firepower for the Rangers, but we need to be vigilant, tough in the tackle and stop them crosses coming in. We are going to need a huge effort from the boys over the next two games, but we know you can do it, come on Sky Blues, let's shag those harbour rats!

De Boer: Suarez does stupid things

Ajax coach Frank de Boer has admitted Luis Suarez is capable of "some stupid things".
Suarez brought shame on Liverpool last weekend when he refused to shake Patrice Evra's hand ahead of the Barclays Premier League defeat at Manchester United.
The South American was eventually forced into an apology after Reds managing director Ian Ayre said Suarez had misled the club about his intentions.
It is the latest in a long line of disciplinary woes for Suarez, who only last season was banned for seven matches by the Dutch FA for biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal while playing for Ajax.
De Boer was assistant to Martin Jol at the time of the incident, in November 2010, but has since assumed full control at Ajax and sanctioned Suarez's £22.7million departure for Liverpool in January last year.
"Luis as a winner," said De Boer. "Outside the pitch he's a fantastic player and person.
"In the game he does everything to win but sometimes he does some stupid things.
"I don't really know the details of what happened in that (Saturday's) game so I can't comment.
"But I don't think it was very smart that he didn't shake Evra's hand because it puts more attention on everything."

Fergie: Player power bad for game

Sir Alex Ferguson believes players may have too much power in football now, and says it's not good for the game.
As Carlos Tevez returned to Manchester following months away from City, Ferguson told FIFA.com that the balance of power between players and clubs has shifted too far in one direction.
Ferguson said: "To begin with, when I first started out in management 37 years ago there were no agents. Imagine that! There was no freedom of contract either, so players were totally tied to their clubs.
"A change in that sense was inevitable, though I think that now the scales tipped completely in the other direction and I'm not sure it's good for the game.
"Of course the way the media works has changed too, there's a lot of pressure on journalists to publish huge news stories - not just about sport but about everything - and that's had an impact on us, no doubt about it."
When asked what the secret behind his longevity at United was, Ferguson said:
"It has a lot to do with the club. I've had the opportunity to work with a more long-term view and change direction towards where I think it should go. I can plan two or three years ahead, which is something that doesn't happen hardly anywhere else.
"This is a results industry and if a manager loses four or five games in a row then his job is under threat. But at United that scenario simply isn't possible. I'm in charge of all footballing matters, including our scouting network and youth teams. In that sense I'm very fortunate, because I can make quick decisions on who to bring in next to strengthen the squad and where to get them from."
And Ferguson was asked the inevitable question about when he believed he would retire from the game.
"My philosophy is that, for as long as I'm enjoying my job and I'm in good health, I'm going to carry on here," he said.
"I don't think you can set yourself limits, but nor can you plan too far ahead because you don't know what's going to happen tomorrow. The time will come [for me to retire], obviously, but right now it's not something I'm thinking about."

Champions League - Sanchez double puts Barcelona in control

Two goals from Alexis Sanchez ensured Barcelona enjoyed a 3-1 victory away at Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.
The defending European champions dominated for large periods at the BayArena and are now firm favourites to progress to the quarter-finals for the fifth season in succession thanks to a fine full Champions League debut from their Chilean forward, and another virtuoso performance from Lionel Messi.
Sanchez, who struggled with injury during the group stages, opened the scoring after 41 minutes of a first half in which Leverkusen were lamentably negative on home turf. However, the Bundesliga side opened up in the second half and equalised through Michal Kadlec before a quick response from Sanchez put Barca back in front.
Messi produced a superb performance when spraying the ball about and executing some trademark dribbles from his free role in attack, but having earlier hit the post finally secured a deserved goal, and a 28th in his past 29 Champions League starts, when converting with two minutes remaining.
Barcelona had never ceded the majority of possession in their previous 44 Champions League games under Pep Guardiola and it became quickly apparent that particular statistic would not be in jeopardy in Germany. While Barca were as accomplished as ever with the ball at their feet, Leverkusen looked hesitant and unconvincing in front of their home supporters.
The consequence was that the Bundesliga side spent much of the first half chasing the ball and were unable to seriously trouble Victor Valdes in the away goal. Indeed, as Barca monopolised possession and restricted Leverkusen to only sporadic snatches of opportunity, it became apparent how they were able to restrict their opponents to just seven shots on target during the duration of the group stage.
As excellent as they have been in Europe, unconvincing performances away from home are the reason Barca sit 10 points behind Real Madrid in La Liga and in Germany they struggled to replicate the brilliance that has accompanied many of their performances at Camp Nou.
Messi, hunted down in packs whenever he got the ball, fired one shot at Bernd Leno after taking a ball over the top from Dani Alves on his chest, while Adriano, stationed out wide on the left with Pedro sat on the bench, drove another effort wildly off target.
But with Leverkusen remaining remarkably subdued, it only took one moment of excellence from Messi to open them up after 41 minutes: the forward took possession of the ball inside the centre circle before flicking it into the right channel with a glorious pass off the outside of his boot.
Both Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas charged forward to meet the ball but it was the former who got there first and he fired a shot between the legs of Leno for his first Champions League goal. It was just reward for the only side with the aptitude or intent to try and use the ball constructively.
But despite failing to create a single chance in the first half, Leverkusen were level after seven minutes of the second.Vedran Corluka, a January signing from Tottenham, did superbly well to get away from Eric Abidal and hook a cross in for Kadlec, who arrived at the back post and leapt above Sanchez to steer his header home.
Their lead lasted all of three minutes. Sanchez was afforded too much space when racing onto a perfectly-weighted through-ball from Fabregas and the Chile international took a touch to go wide of the onrushing Leno before converting with a neat finish inside the near post.
What had previously been a rather sanitised contest suddenly erupted and Leverkusen caught the new mood perfectly when quickly responding with another excellent chance. Renato Augusto managed to bundle his way past a number of Barca bodies before finding enough space in the box to fire in a low effort that forced Valdes into a smart low save to his right.
The Barca keeper, underemployed in the first half, was found to be in excellent form again after 65 minutes as Gonzalo Castro raced onto a headed pass and fired a firm low effort across the keeper. Valdes flung out his left arm and got the faintest of touches on the ball to turn it against the base of the post.
Leverkusen were benefiting from a far more positive attitude than that which was on display during the first half, but they could never negate the inherent threat posed by Messi and on 73 minutes he was desperately unlucky not to add a third. Coming in off the right, Messi darted between two markers with a turn of pace and lifted the ball over Leno, only to see his effort come off the outside of the near post.
A seventh goal in six Champions League games this season appeared to have eluded the Argentina star, who then forced Leno into a low save after driving into the box from a central position and firing back across goal.
But, after Stefan Kiessling and Sanchez had exchanged headed chances, Messi did etch his name on the scoresheet. He was the creator once again, playing in Alves with a sliding pass, and then raced forward some 25 yards to get on the end of the right back's unselfish cross to slide the ball home.
Messi became the most prolific South American in the history of European competition with 45 goals and in the process all but ensured Barca will progress to the quarter-finals following the second leg at Camp Nou.

Bundesliga - Beckenbauer hits out at Robben

Bayern Munich great Franz Beckenbauer has criticised the club's out-of-form Dutch winger Arjen Robben, describing him as selfish after he lost his starting spot in the past few games.
"He has played away some of his recognition. He is selfish like so many others," Beckenbauer told Sky on Monday.
"His reaction alone to when he has a good effort or scores a goal; he does not run towards the player who set him up to score but instead he runs towards his family in the stands. He lets the team run after him.
"At some point the team-mate will say 'if you are not going to recognise my pass then next time you can come and get the ball yourself',"World Cup winner Beckenbauer, now the club's honorary president said.
The 28-year-old Robben has had another injury-plagued season after steering Bayern to a domestic double and Champions League final in 2010 but missing much of the 2010-11 campaign through injury.
Robben, who underwent groin surgery in October, was an unused substitute in the German Cup quarter-final win over VfB Stuttgart last week and came on in the second half for injured Thomas Mueller during the 2-0 league victory over Kaiserslautern on Saturday.
Bayern, chasing a domestic and Champions League treble, have said they are interested in extending Robben's contract beyond 2013.

Ligue 1 - Hazard ponders Spurs switch

Belgium and Lille midfielder Eden Hazard admits he could join Tottenham this summer.
The 21-year-old is one of the hottest properties in Europe at the moment and is reported to have attracted the interest of the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid and Spurs' fierce rivals Arsenal.
The midfielder appears to have his heart set on a move to the Barclays Premier League this summer and he concedes White Hart Lane may be his destination.
Hazard denied reports he has already agreed terms with Tottenham, but he did tell Belgian TV station RTBF that a move to join Harry Redknapp's team is possible.
He said: "Maybe it will be Tottenham. It is a great English club.
