New Era!

With the breaking news that Glenn 'Spike' Ferguson has been named as the new manager, we wonder is this the start of a new era or just one more dot in our history books? Spike was a great player and a great competitor and if he can instil these traits into our team, he might just be the messiah we've been looking for. It's not known who his back-room staff might be but one name that's been mentioned is Lee Docherty. So let's recap, we've appointed a manager who had a record second to none as a striker in our league, his first appointment is man who was a midfield genius and is held in awe in our league circles, all he needs now is to appoint Noel Baile and maybe he can get our slip shod defence sorted out.

In an ironic twist of fate his first official match in charge will be against his former masters, Linfield (the I.F.A.) and the next game is away to his last employers, Lisburn Distillery, in the Irish cup. It doesn't get any easier after that, if United or Glens don't have to replay their Irish cup games, then there's a match on Tuesday January 17 at the Showgrounds followed by a visit to the hatchet men on the Saturday, then maybe he'll have time to catch his breath. We fervently hope he has seen us play recently and if he is the stand tomorrow, he'll maybe get an idea of our strengths (we haven't seen too many this year) and our weaknesses (too countless to mention). We're not hoping for a quick fix but maybe some fresh ideas and basic defending would be good.

Tomorrow's match is Joe's last game in charge and no doubt the D.C. boys will be up for that as a win will take them 8 points clear of us and practically free from the threat of relegation (35 pts to be mathematically safe), a rare win for us would delay that for a week or two. When we were travelling to Coleraine last Monday we heard the news of Gavin Taggart being in the team and not Ally Teggert, our spirits went down we can tell you. It seems Ally picked a bit of a knee injury and we wish well and a speedy recovery. We just hope that he is fit enough to start tomorrow and if Baker isn't fit, we start with Lowry up front along with Cutch.

Our defence which didn't exactly cover themselves in glory last Monday, will probably be the same but we only hope Joe has told them to get the ball out of there, don't start playing any 'namby pamby' football, for it's the road to no town. The referee tomorrow is Hugh Carville and we think he'll play the match as per rule book, not like Andy 'make the rules as you go along' Hunter, well we live in hope anyway. In an ironic way Sparky's sending off could give the three stoogies, Carson, Jenks and Downey a chance to impress the new boss, but he knows Downey's form from when they were team-mates at Windsor Park. On paper it's a match we can win, but our confidence is shot to rags, let's hope we pull out all the stops, come on Sky Blues, let's shag those Suffolk lambs!

Carlo Ancelotti named new manager of Paris Saint-Germain

Ancelotti has been out of work since leaving Chelsea in May.
Former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has been confirmed as the new coach of Paris Saint-Germain.
The Italian, 52, was announced as manager at a news conference at the Parc des Princes stadium on Friday.
Antoine Kombouare, who led PSG to the top of the French league, had been sacked by the club just hours earlier.
The club released a statement saying: "After two years in which he served with passion as PSG coach, Antoine Kombouare has left as of this date."
It continued: "PSG would like to thank him for the professionalism he has shown throughout his work and expresses its best wishes for his success in his new endeavours.

CARLO ANCELOTTI HONOURS

(As a player)
European Cup (2), Uefa Super Cup (2), Intercontinental Cup (2), Serie A (3), Coppa Italia (4), Supercoppa Italiana
(As a manager)
Champions League (2), Uefa Super Cup (2), Fifa Club World Cup, Serie A, Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, Premier League, FA Cup, Community Shield
"For his part, Antoine Kombouare expressed gratitude to PSG for the confidence it had shown in him over the years. He remains the biggest supporter of the club and will continue to support it in the coming years."
Ancelotti has been out of work since being sacked as Chelsea boss in May.
His deal with PSG has taken some time to put together, complicated by the fact that 48-year-old Kombouare was not sacked by the club until Friday.
Although Kombouare led PSG to the top of the Ligue 1 table at the winter break, he also oversaw their exit from the Europa League group stage.
The club's Qatari owners have lofty ambitions and are keen to bring high-profile names to the French capital.
Former AC Milan boss Ancelotti is expected to be joined shortly byDavid Beckham, whom he coached briefly at the Italian club during the former England captain's first loan spell at the San Siro.
PSG are close to completing a deal to sign the former England skipper once his contract with Los Angeles Galaxy expires at the end of the month, BBC Sport understands.
Ancelotti won a league and cup double with Chelsea in his first season in charge before he was sacked at the end of last season despite finishing second in the Premier League.
The Italian was also a two-time Champions League winner during his decade-long spell at Milan.
Qatar Sports Investments bought PSG last summer and their president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, promised "to make the club a great team and a strong brand on the international scene".
They promptly spent £71.3m to attract new talent, including paying £35.2m to Italian side Palermo for 22-year-old midfielder Javier Pastore.

The Ghost Town Gossip

Arsenal to offer Henry a two-month deal, Chelsea close on Cahill, 'Arry likes Tevez and more splendid gossip...

ARSENAL OFFER HENRY DEAL
The big news in a few papers this morning is that Arsenal will offer Thierry Henry a deal at Arsenal.
The Daily Mail reports that Henry will be offered a two-month loan deal to stay at the club - where he has been training in the MLS off-season - as cover for Robin van Persie when Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh go to the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Mail claims: 'He could feature in seven Premier League games if he accepts the offer - as well as FA Cup ties and the first leg of Arsenal's Champions League last-16 clash against AC Milan. But it is the Premier League where Wenger's side need most help, with key games against Manchester United and Tottenham coming up.
'Henry has impressed with his sharpness, attitude and effect on the Arsenal squad. He has become increasingly in favour of a return to the club and was moved to tears when a statue of him was unveiled at the Emirates this month.'
The Daily Star backs up the story, while The Daily Telegraph reports that the two-month offer will not stop Arsene Wenger looking at both Mario Goetze and Lukas Podolski, the latter of whom Wenger believes can act 'as someone who can function in Gervinho's position to the left of a main striker and in the central role that is occupied by Van Persie'.
Finally, The Times reports that Arsenal's players have backed a move for Podolski, specifically Alex Song and Per Mertesacker.

CHELSEA CLOSING ON CAHILL
It looks like Gary Cahill's move to Chelsea could be wrapped up pretty quickly.
The paper claims Chelsea and Bolton have already agreed a £7million fee for the defender, and have been given permission to speak to Cahill about personal terms and whatnot.
The Mirror sagely and solemnly reports that Cahill 'is expected to say "yes" to the Stamford Bridge switch, although there are still details to be sorted out about the size and length of contract.'
Hmmm. A team heading for relegation or one still with a very outside chance of winning the title, but with an excellent chance of making the Champions League.
Tough call.

AVB STAYS WHATEVER
Interesting tale in The Sun, who report that whatever happens this season, Chelsea will not sack Andre Villas-Boas. Which is very nice.
Apparently Roman Abramovich has made it very clear that he will be sticking with his young manager even if Chelsea finish the season potless.
And not only that: 'But Red Rom has given Villas-Boas, 34, the all-clear to launch a major dressing-room shake-up in the summer.
'Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda, John Obi Mikel and Salomon Kalou are all set to follow Nicolas Anelka and Alex out of the club.'

BERBA OFF TO BAYER?
Quick word from Bayer Leverkeusen, who have apparently confirmed that contact has been made with Manchester United for Dimitar Berbatov.
Berbatov of course played there before coming to England, and with his contract up in the summer, he may leave in January.
And The Sun quotes Bayer chief executive Wolfgang Holzhauser as saying: "I'd even say contact is friendly. But nothing is concrete."

'ARRY LIKES TEVEZ
If you're interested in what Harry Redknapp said when asked if he'd be keen on signing Carlos Tevez, then read on. If not, skip to the next bit.
Redknapp told SHOUTsport: "I like Tevez, he's a fantastic player. I couldn't see it happening, but I'd be a liar if I said I wouldn't take him if I had the chance.
"When he plays, he's top class. Whatever you say about him, when he players he has a real go and never plays without putting in all in."
In fact, it sounds like it's going to be a quiet January at the Lane: "I think we'll stay with what we've got. Unless you can buy a fantastic player, we aren't going to improve too much.
"I'd probably give myself a headache by bringing someone else in because I've got plenty of cover in most positions."

ARSENAL & CHELSEA IN FOR CUENCA?
Quick line in The Daily Mail, which we will reproduce in full here:
'Arsenal and Chelsea are monitoring contract developments between Barcelona and starlet striker Isaac Cuenca.
'The 20-year-old has yet to agree new terms and is out of contract in the summer so is free to speak to other clubs in the New Year.'
Since Cuenca has only just made it into the Barca first team, we'd consider it particularly ballsy for him to demand too much from them in terms of a contract, but you know what these footballing types are like.

PAV SWAYED BY ANZHI
Absolutely superb quotes from Roman Pavlyuchenko's ever-entertaining agent.
About a potential move to moneybags Anzhi, Oleg Artemov said:
"At the beginning, Roman absolutely ignored Anzhi. He wasn't against going back to play in Russia, just not to the Makhachkala-based team.
"But Roman is tired of the uncertainty and the lack of match action."
He's presumably also tired of only earning something like £70,000-a-week, when he could be raking-in a billion pounds per second at Anzhi.

CARLO GOES TO PARIS
Looks like Carlo Ancelotti is going to be the new Paris-St Germain manager.
The papers report that David Beckham will follow him shortly after, while The Daily Mail reckons Chelsea defender Alex will be his first signing.
Plus: 'Ancelotti's move has also sparked speculation that Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda could follow Alex to Paris, while the 52-year-old has also been linked with moves for his old Milan stars Alexandre Pato and Kaka, who is now at Real Madrid.'

AND THE REST...
Arsenal's Tomas Rosicky is wanted by wealthy Greek giants Olympiakos...Newcastle are set to make a shock move for versatile Middlesbrough star Rhys Williams...David Beckham will bag £12.5million by following Carlo Ancelotti into Paris Saint-Germain...West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has made a £3million bid for Huddersfield wonderkid Jordan Rhodes...Nottingham Forest want £2.5million for Chris Gunter. Norwich have had two bids waved away, while Fulham and Blackburn are also chasing the defender...Alan Pardew is planning a £3million January swoop for Sheffield United's teen sensation Harry Maguire...Luke Young says QPR would be mad to sell Adel Taarabt...Martin Jol is considering a move for PSG striker Guillaume Hoarau once he sells Andrew Johnson...DJ Campbell is being offered a move back to Blackpool just six months after quitting for QPR...Fulham are ready to bid £3.5million for Doncaster striker Billy Sharp...Napoli striker Edinson Cavani's agent says he is not attempting to engineer a move to Chelsea.

Sneijder to United! Donnelly to Liverpool! 10 transfers we expect to happen in the window

Incredibly, it's that time again already when clubs desperate to achieve their goals start scouting around for the players they can pinch mid-season.
Don't believe anyone who tells you it will be a quiet one.
The clubs at the bottom of the Premier League are bang in trouble and need urgent reinforcements.
At the top, Manchester United need fantasy in their midfield, Arsenal need back-up for Robin van Persie. Liverpool need an alternative to misfiring Andy Carroll to support Luis Suarez, Chelsea need a clearout to make way for fresh blood and Spurs will be hunting the "mega-signing" that Harry Redknapp believes will put them in with a shout of the title.http://view.atdmt.com/ADO/view/278612728/direct;wi.1;hi.1/01
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Martin O'Neill needs more striking options at Sunderland. Everton and QPR too are a touch light up front.
And Newcastle need to sell to fund moves for a new striker to back up Demba Ba and a new defender.
A quiet window this January? No chance. Here are 10 moves we expect to happen...

1. Gary Cahill: Bolton to Chelsea
Only 26 years of age and Chelsea want him to recreate the effective central defensive partnership that has done well for England alongside John Terry.

2. Jan Vertonghen: Ajax to Newcastle
Alan Pardew needs a central defender badly with Steven Taylor out for the season. Vertonghen looks a good player. He's only 24 but he has already won 35 caps for Belgium and won the Dutch championship.
The only problem for Newcastle is that Spurs are also interested as well.

3. Carlos Tevez: Man City to AC Milan
We all know what Tevez can do in front of goal. We also know the problems that come with him but Milan want to sign him.
The only problem is City only want to sell and Milan only want to take him on loan.
Again, watch out for Spurs with this one. Harry Redknapp has been making noises about being interested in taking Tevez.
If Spurs were to get him they would have a real, real chance of being up there in the fight for the title in the second half of the season.

4. Wesley Sneijder: Inter Milan to Manchester United
Forget what everyone is saying about his injury record. I think United will sign him and I think  United will get him right and I think he will be fantastic for them.
He's 27 and the word is that Milan will have sell to raise funds to rebuild at the club.

5. Thierry Henry: New York Red Bulls to Arsenal
He is 34 but he can still do a job. He knows the club, he knows the players and the way Arsenal play suits him down to the ground.
Arsenal lose two strikers to the African Cup of Nations and Henry would be a great move even at his age.

8. Salomon Kalou: Chelsea to PSG
At 26 still got a lot of football in him. Has always known where the goal is but has more fashionable footballers ahead of him at Chelsea.
His contract runs out of the end of the season and billionaire French club PSG are keen to give him a new home. An approach has already been made.

Sneijder to Man Utd? Pato to Arsenal FC? Drogba to Real Madrid CF?

- Inter Milan are ready to sell Manchester United target Wesley Sneijder next month, according to the Daily Mail.

- Arsenal are considering making a bid for AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato, according to Caughtoffside.com.

- Real Madrid are considering launching a bid to sign Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, according to Spanish publication Sport.

- Bayer Leverkusen are keen on signing Dimitar Berbatov, according to one of the Manchester United striker's representatives.

- Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar insists he is happy at the club despite reported interest from Manchester United.

- Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini does not believe he will be successful if he tries to sign Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi next month.

Real Madrid CF considering bid to sign Didier Drogba on free transfer - report

Real Madrid are reportedly considering launching a bid to sign Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.
Drogba is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to agree a new deal with the Blues. The 33-year-old has been linked with a number of sides in recent weeks including Tottenham, Galatasaray, Anzhi Makhachkala and former club Marseille.

Reports in Spain earlier this year suggested that Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho was keen on being reunited with the Ivory Coast international, who he worked with while he was in charge at Stamford Bridge.

And according to Spanish publication Sport, the Special One could look to sign Drogba on a free transfer next summer.

Earlier this month, Drogba was offered the chance to move to China following Nicolas Anelka's move to Shanghai Shenhua, and he knows that he could triple his wages by making the move to Asia, pocketing up to £20million in wages.

Chelsea are believed to have offered the forward a one-year extension and talks have been ongoing for some time as he holds out for a two-year deal.

Although it is thought that he would prefer to stay in west London, Drogba is said to be open to a move should his demands not be met, and the chance to play at the highest level in Spain may well appeal.

By running down his contract, the Ivorian would also put himself in a good position to negotiate a bumper pay day for what would likely be his final playing contract.

Barcelona do not have a deal in place for Santos' Neymar, says vice-president Jordi Cardoner

It has been reported that the European champions have paid £8 million to secure first refusal on the Brazil international but the club official insists that this is not the case.

There were also suggestions that the player could move to La Liga before the 2014 World Cup.
However, Cardoner insists that no agreement has been reached with Santos, telling RAC 1: "To my knowledge we did not pay €10m to have a preferential option for Neymar."

Cardoner also stated that Barca coach Josep Guardiola will have the final say on whether the highly rated teenager will eventually make the switch to Camp Nou.

"If we’re talking about [Neymar] it is because he is a player considered qualified to be a part of this team, but our technicians will decide," the vice-president added.

The 19-year-old is considered one of the most exciting young prospects in world football and has already been capped 15 times by Brazil. He signed a new five-year contract with Santos earlier this year.

- Former Chelsea manager Glenn Hoddle believes defender Alex could be the ideal January signing for Arsenal.

Abidal, Kaka, Soldado and more - the list of La Liga stars who could be leaving their clubs in January

As 2011 draws to a close and a new year draws ever nearer, Goal.com takes a look at some of the stars in Spain who may be changing teams in the transfer market this winter.
ANALYSIS
The countdown has begun. 2012 is just days away and the New Year means a new start for us all. And that includes footballers, with many players set to be on the move as the transfer window opens in January.

Although quieter than the summer window, January can be a make-or-break time for clubs looking to get out of trouble or boost their aspirations in mid-season.

Ahead of all that action, we look at some of the stars from La Liga who could be moving on to pastures new this winter.

Eric Abidal's contract expires in the summer and, although the French full back has constantly claimed that he wishes to remain at Barcelona, he also hinted in October that he would be interested in a move to one of Europe's elite clubs if a new deal cannot be agreed. Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Manchester City are all monitoring his situation, according to the player himself, and all would be willing to pay a fee to secure the defender's services in January.

However, reports in the Spanish press claim that Abidal is now very close to agreeing a new deal at the Catalan club, where he has played since 2007, so any prospective buyers will need to get a move on.

Diego Buonanotte hasn't had the happiest of starts to his Malaga career, but things are looking up after the Argentine playmaker netted a crucial late goal for the Andalusians in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night to ensure Manuel Pellegrini's men advanced to the last 16 following a 2-2 draw at home to Getafe.

Appearances in La Liga have mainly been as a substitute, however, with the Argentine given few opportunities to shine for the Costa del Sol outfit. Getafe, Rayo Vallecano and Atletico Madrid would all like to take the talented player to the capital, but Wednesday's intervention may just boost his chances of making it in the south of Spain after all.

RICARDO COSTA | Valencia, Defender, 29

Ricardo Costa may have played a part in the Porto side that marched to victory in the Champions League in 2004, but he is no longer in favor at Valencia and appears to have a frosty relationship with coach Unai Emery. The Portuguese defender has featured just twice in La Liga this season and could well be making a move in the January window.

The player repeatedly insisted in the summer that he wished to remain at Mestalla, but his lack of appearances in recent times has caused him to reassess and the center back has now admitted his willingness to move on in January. Portuguese giants Benfica may make a move for the defender, while Atletico Madrid could also renew its interest. At the moment, however, Betis looks to be the favorites to land the center back.

Kaka's career at Real Madrid has still never really taken off. The Brazil playmaker has shown signs this season of returning to his very best but, just when he looks to be returning to the peak of his powers, he picks up an injury.

The Brazilian has claimed that he will not leave the Santiago Bernabeu until he has become a big hit but, in his third season at the club, it still has not quite happened. With an assault on La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey ahead, Jose Mourinho will be reluctant to sell in January. But, with Angel Di Maria and Jose Callejon shining, nothing is impossible. And, should Kaka leave, there will be no shortage of interested parties.

Carlos Kameni is a fine goalkeeper and has enjoyed a successful career at Espanyol, but the Cameroonian has lost his place under coach Mauricio Pochettino and now appears to have no future at the Catalan club.

Kameni almost signed for Roma in the summer, but that move never materialized. Now, Espanyol will be keen to shift him from their wage bill in January and Malaga look in pole position to snap up the African shot-stopper. Premier League sides Tottenham and Fulham have also been linked.

As Villarreal finished fourth and reached the semifinals of the Europa League last season, Nilmar appeared happy at the Spanish side. The Brazilian forward outlined his desire to go on and win things but, instead, the Yellow Submarine have been sinking, losing all of their Champions League group games this term and sitting dangerously close to the bottom of the Primera Division.

And now, the striker looks to have had enough. The player's agent has revealed contact with Serie A club Roma, while a move to Fiorentina in part-exchange with Alberto Gilardino has also been mooted recently. Brazilian side Sao Paulo are in the frame as well, although such a switch seems less likely. With Giuseppe Rossi sidelined, however, and Villarreal in trouble, he may have to wait until the summer before moving on.

MESUT OZIL | Real Madrid, Forward, 23

Mesut Ozil was nothing short of a revelation for Real Madrid last term, but the German playmaker has looked less impressive this season and friction with coach Jose Mourinho has led to talk of a possible move for the talented 23-year-old, who has spent much of his time on the bench in 2011-12.

On holiday in Turkey, Ozil refused to rule out a switch this winter. He did later say that he is happy at Madrid and considered Mourinho as a father figure, however, and he is unlikely to leave at this stage as the club chases honors in three competitions. Should he be allowed to move on, Manchester United would be likely to join the chase for his signature. The club, like Liverpool, is set to be disappointed, though.

Roberto Soldado finished 2010-11 in red-hot form and has picked up where he left off with some stunning showings this term. The former Real Madrid striker has been the undoubted star for a Valencia side pushing the big two at the top of the table. And, with 11 goals to his name already, the 26-year-old looks on the verge of a Spain call up as well.

Paris Saint-Germain is interested, while Premier League duo Liverpool and Spurs have also been linked. With Valencia now managing its debts, however, the former Getafe and Osasuna man should stay at Mestalla for a while longer yet.
