Everton down City as title race hots up

Darron Gibson did his old club a favour by giving Everton a 1-0 win at home to Manchester City, blowing the Premier League title race wide open again by inflicting City's third league defeat of the season.
On the hour mark Irish midfielder Gibson, who joined the Toffees from Manchester Unitedearlier this month, struck a trademark long shot that took a deflection off Gareth Barry before flying past Joe Hart.
City had chances of their own and pushed for a late equaliser but they were again below par, with United moving level on points after they beat Stoke City 2-0.
After their third defeat at Goodison in a row, Roberto Mancini’s side are still seven goals ahead of United but, with Mario Balotelli suspended and Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero toiling somewhat, they lack their previous verve and could be in for a hectic time over the next 15 matches.
Aside from the result there was a major talking point: a bizarre on-pitch protest in the first half by a middle-aged man assumed to be a disgruntled Everton supporter, who ran on to the pitch and appeared to handcuff himself to Joe Hart’s goal.
But it ultimately did not detract from a great win for Everton, who unveiled new striker Nikica Jelavic at half-time after he completed his big-money move from Rangers.
The aforementioned incident took police and stewards around four minutes to remove the miscreant supporter in one of the strangest incidents in pitch-invader history, managing to be amusing, sad and worrying all at once.
In the meantime, what had been an entertaining half of football - in which Everton gave as good as they got - lost its fizz, the momentum disrupted and players clearly rattled, not to mention chilled after being made to stand in freezing conditions for a period.
Everton had the first opportunity of the match when, on five minutes, former Toffees defender Joleon Lescott  was on hand to head all-action Argentine forward Denis Stracqualursi’s goal-bound header off the line, Hart well beaten.
Seconds later Tim Howard was called into action to bat out James Milner’s low drive, while Aguero drilled a shot wide after a mazy dribble.
City, however, were not at their best and they were looking frustrated by Everton’s all-action approach: on his return from a four-match ban, Vincent Kompany was lucky to escape with a booking when he left with the arm on Stracqualursi.
In the minutes leading up to ‘the incident’, both sides had good chances: Marouane Fellaini volleyed just wide after a super flick-on by Stracqualursi, while Samir Nasri hit the angle of post and bar with a swerving long-range shot.
After the incident there was an extended lull but, 15 minutes into the second half, the game sparked back into life when Fellaini put in a risky but clean slide tackle on Aguero after he had wriggled clear in the box.
Everton countered through the buzzing Royston Drenthe, who found Leighton Baines out wide: a typical cross from the England left-back found its way to Landon Donovan, who showed his intelligence to forego the shot and lay the ball up for Gibson, whose long-range shooting is his main attribute and who did not disappoint with a vicious drive off Barry’s shin.
That was the cue for City to throw everything forward, bringing wide players Adam Johnson and Aleksandar Kolarov into play as they looked to force the issue.
But with Aguero drifting out of the game and Dzeko looking clumsy - most of his interventions were hold-up headers and wayward shots well off target - there was a lack of a cutting edge, not to mention a disappointing showing from David Silva, who barely had an impact.
Everton, meanwhile, looked tasty on the break, with Gibson putting a couple of distance volleys wide as, with news filtering back to Old Trafford, United fans chanted "Fergie, sign him up" about their former player.
The latter stages saw City pile the pressure on but Tim Howard barely made a save, John Heitinga, Tony Hibbert and Phil Neville imperious at the back, with Tim Cahill and Donovan showing great intelligence to slow down the play when they did get the ball.
There was a half-shout for a penalty as Neville appeared to handle a Kolarov cross, but his arms were by his side and it was very much ball-to-hand.
Everton held on fairly comfortably in the end as City became more aimless with their attempts to find a breakthrough, the victory deserved in the end and one that cements the Toffees in mid-table.

United beat Stoke to go level at top

Manchester United cruised to an entirely comfortable 2-0 victory against Stoke City at Old Trafford to go level at the top with Manchester City, who lost at Everton.
The result was never in any doubt as United scored a penalty in either half, courtesy of Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov.
Stoke created next to nothing in attack in a largely forgettable game, and were lucky not to concede another clear-cut penalty with 20 minutes to go.
United made light of Wayne Rooney's continued absence, while Ben Amos kept a clean sheet on his first start in goal. The 21-year-old came for David De Gea, who was officially listed as ill, but it was no surprise to see him taken out of the firing line after a nightmare performance against Liverpool in the FA Cup on Saturday.
The away side had 26 per cent possession in the first half and no shots on target. United were also pedestrian in a surprisingly lacklustre opening period.
The first incident of note came as Hernandez got to the by-line, just a couple of yards from goal. He elected to shoot rather than cross and his effort flew into the side netting.
Just a couple of minutes later and Paul Scholes turned back time as he very nearly scored what would have been a classic Scholes goal. Following a corner, Berbatov nudged it back to the veteran midfielder, who smashed an effort on the half volley from 20 yards inches wide.
Michael Carrick breached the Stoke defence 10 minutes from half time after being played in by an excellent reverse ball from Berbatov, but his first time effort went agonisingly wide of the far post.
United wouldn’t have long to wait though as just five minutes later Jermaine Pennant brought down Park Ji-Sung in the box, and Hernandez stepped up to send Thomas Sorensen the wrong way.
It didn’t take long for United to double their lead in the second period. Jonathan Walters, chasing Antonio Valencia, inexplicably tugged his man in the area after 52 minutes in one of the most clear cut penalties you’ll ever see.
Strangely, it was Berbatov who took the penalty even with Hernandez still on the pitch. It didn’t matter though as the Bulgarian slotted it right into the corner, Sorenson going the right way, but unable to get there.
After 71 minutes an almost equally clear cut penalty should have been given as Patrice Evra was brought down from behind when darting into the area. Perhaps aware he’d given two already though, Mike Jones waved play on.
Paul Pogba made a late appearance for United and looked very impressive during his cameo, sending in a series of dangerous crosses from the right.
Berbatov missed a sitter late on, but it didn’t matter. Manchester City will be very worried indeed.

Spurs boost title push with swoop for Saha after letting Pavlyuchenko go Louis-Saha-signs-Tottenham-Everton

Louis Saha has sealed a surprise move to Tottenham from Everton.

The former France international agreed a deal until the end of the season with the option of another year at White Hart Lane.

Spurs made their move as they offloaded Roman Pavlyuchenko to Locomotiv Moscow for around £11million.

Saha has made 19 appearances for Everton this season but has only scored two goals and the last of those came against Chelsea in the Carling Cup on October 26. He only had six months remaining on his contract at Goodison Park.
Whether Saha’s imminent departure gives Everton scope to do something else in the window remains to be seen – David Moyes has been tracking a loan deal for, among others, Paris St Germain’s Guillaume Hoarau.

Since arriving at Goodison Park on a free transfer in August 2008, Saha has endured a number of fitness issues but he created a little bit of history for Everton in that he scored the quickest ever goal in an FA Cup final against Chelsea in May 2009.

Spurs were desperate to offload Pavlyuchenko, who was involved in a furious training ground bust-up with Harry Redknapp's No 2 Kevin Bond.

The Russian scored 42 times in 114 appearances since joining from Sporting Moscow for £13.8m in 2008.

QPR agree fee with Fulham for Bobby Zamora after Mark Hughes ties up two and a half year deal for Djibril Cissé

Fulham have accepted an offer from Queens Park Rangers for Bobby Zamora, with the England striker currently in talks over his personal terms, after Mark Hughes secured another striking target with the signing of former Liverpool striker Djibril Cissé.

Capital movement: Bobby Zamora is poised to make the short journey from Fulham to QPR on transfer deadline day
Zamora played under Hughes at Fulham last season and wants regular football ahead of Euro 2012 but must weigh up the risk of joining a club currently just two points above the relegation zone.
There is expected to be a release clause in any contract with QPR relating to relegation.
Hughes earlier moved to bolster his attack by bringing Cissé to Loftus Road. However the club have released former fan favourite Martin Rowland.
On a busy day at Loftus Road QPR agreed what is believed to be a £4m deal to sign Cissé from Lazio.
QPR announced that the 30-year-old forward had signed a two-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed sum.
"I rate Djibril very, very highly," said manager Mark Hughes, who has also signed Nigerian left-back Taye Taiwo, England under-21 defender Nedum Onuoha and Mali midfielder Samba Diakite since taking over this month.
"I've watched him for many years and always been impressed by what he brings to the table. He's a huge threat to opposition's defences. He's got great pace, power and movement and that's something we'll hopefully benefit from."
QPR, who returned to the top flight this season after a 15-year absence, are 16th in the 20-team Premier League and two points clear of the relegation zone.
Cissé, who has also played for Sunderland, Auxerre, Marseille and Panathinaikos, is eligible to make his club debut against Aston Villa on Wednesday.
He said former Manchester City manager Hughes had been the key to his move.
"He wanted to sign me at Manchester City and now I am finally here with him at QPR," he said. "He wants to achieve big things here, that was all I needed to hear from him. I have unfinished business here in England."

Cisse signs for QPR

QPR have completed the signing of Lazio striker Djibril Cisse, the Premier League club have announced.
The 30-year-old former Liverpool and Sunderland player has returned to England for a fee that Press Association Sport understands to be in the region of 5million euros (£4.18million).
QPR have confirmed that Cisse has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Loftus Road and has been registered in time to make his QPR debut at Aston Villa on Wednesday, subject to international clearance being received one hour before kick-off.
"I've watched him for many years and always been impressed by what he brings to the table."I rate Djibril very, very highly," Rs manager Mark Hughes told the club's official website, qpr.co.uk.
"He's a huge threat to oppositions' defences. He's got great pace, power and movement and that's something we will hopefully benefit from."
"QPR have a hugely ambitious project," said Cisse, who will wear the number 23 shirt. "When I talked to the manager, he spoke highly of the club and where he wants to take it over the next few years.
"He wanted to sign me at Manchester City and now I am finally here with him at QPR. He wants to achieve big things here
Cisse becomes Hughes' fourth signing since taking over as QPR manager from Neil Warnock following the arrivals of Samba Diakite, Taye Taiwo and Nedum Onuoha.
Manchester United striker Federico Macheda arrived on loan earlier this month during Warnock's reign.

Arsenal FC and FC Barcelona target Ravel Morrison joins West Ham

West Ham United have completed the signing of Ravel Morrison from Manchester United.

Morrison, who will celebrate his 19th birthday on Thursday, is widely considered to be one of the finest prospects to have emerged from United's academy for a number of years and had been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks including Arsenal, Barcelona, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

The teenager has joined the Hammers on a three and a half year contract for an undisclosed fee believed to be worth around £1million.

Morrison told the club's official website: "I'm really pleased to have signed.

"The move has happened very quickly and I'm looking forward to hopefully moving up to the Premier League with West Ham soon.

"I'm an attacking player and I'm hoping to get the fans on their feet.

"I met with Sam Allardyce this morning and he welcomed me to the club. I also played with Robert Hall in the England team and I know him well so that will be really helpful to have someone here that I know."

Liverpool FC to launch late bid for Jermain Defoe?

Liverpool are reportedly preparing to make a late swoop to sign Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish on Monday insisted that he would not look to buy or sell any players before the January transfer window closes on Tuesday night, but speaking prior to Tuesday night's Premier League game at Wolverhampton, Wolves boss Mick McCarthy revealed that the Scot wanted to delay the game to avoid a clash with transfer deadline day.

McCarthy suggested that Dalglish could be - or at least was - looking to do some last-minute transfer business.

And according to the Daily Express, the Reds could be set to launch a late bid for Defoe.

The 29-year-old was linked with a move to Anfield earlier in the month.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has preferred to start with on-loan Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor up front this season, leading to speculation that Defoe could leave White Hart Lane this month.

Redknapp admitted earlier this month that there has been interest in Defoe, but insisted: "We are not selling him. He [his agent] is saying this club wants him and that club wants him – that is how they make their money.

"He is not moving anywhere, though. He is on contract here and is a big player for us."

Defoe recently teamed up with a new agent, Struan Marshall, who already represents Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, along with Anfield team-mates Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson, who both completed moves to Merseyside last summer.

The January transfer window closes at 23:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC target Milos Krasic set for Tottenham move?

Tottenham have refused to rule out signing Juventus winger Milos Krasic, who has been linked with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Reports at the weekend suggested Zenit St Petersburg were in talks with Juventus over a deal for Krasic, although it is thought the Russians are only keen on a loan deal.

But although Juve would prefer to offload the 27-year-old on a permanent deal, reports in Italy have suggested that they could reluctantly agree to a short-term move if their asking price is not met.

And Tottenham coach Joe Jordan has refused to rule out a late swoop for the Serbia international.

"I cannot say too much about the club's intentions," he toldtuttojuve.com.

"Krasic is one of the many names that the transfer market offers, but a successful negotiation will depend on the will of the player.

"We are happy with our squad. We could do something, though, if a player leaves in the coming hours. Anything is possible."

A move to Zenit could still happen should Krasic fail to seal a move to England as the Russian transfer window will remain open until mid-February.

Reports last week had suggested that Juventus had contacted Liverpool to offer them the midfielder, who has also been linked with Lazio, while it was also reported that Reds boss Kenny Dalglish was interested in taking him on a six-month loan deal.

Pizarro in talks with Manchester City

Manchester City are in talks with Roma over a loan move for midfielder David Pizarro.
Roma general director Franco Baldini revealed the talks for the Chile international, who has been strongly linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium to bolster City's midfield.
"We are only negotiating with Manchester City for Pizarro," Baldini said.
"We will try to complete the deal before tonight."
The 32-year-old Pizarro has made just seven league appearances for Roma this season. He joined the club from Inter Milan in 2006 and is under contract with the Giallorossi until June 2013.

AC Milan back in for Liverpool FC target Carlos Tevez

AC Milan have reportedly reopened negotiations over a late move for Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez, who has also been linked with a move to Liverpool.

Inter, Paris Saint-Germain and former club West Ham have also shown interest in Tevez during the January transfer window, although it is thought he would prefer a move to the reigning Serie A champions.

It was thought the arrival of Maxi Lopez at the weekend would end Milan's interest in the 27-year-old, although Milan CEO Adriano Galliani had refused to rule out a late swoop for the wantaway forward.

Tuttomercatoweb on Monday had reported that Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi was considering making funds available to launch a late bid for the Argentina international, and according to Sky Sports, Milan re-entered talks with Tevez's representatives on Tuesday ahead of the 23:00 GMT transfer deadline.

City's reluctance to either lower their £25million asking price or let the forward leave on loan has thus far prevented a deal from happening, and it appears there is still a lot of work for the Rossoneri to do before a deal can go through.

A report on Tuesday morning had suggested Tevez's representative, Kia Joorabchian, failed with a bid to secure a move to Spanish champions Barcelona

Chelsea seal De Bruyne deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of highly-rated midfielder Kevin de Bruyne from Genk, while they have bid for Nottingham Forest's Patrick Bamford.

De Bruyne

The 20-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal and will remain at the Belgian champions on loan until the end of the season.
De Bruyne, who is predominantly a left-sided player, has been on Chelsea's radar for some time and has played twice against the London club in this year's Champions League group stages.
A statement on Genk's website read: "The transfer of Kevin De Bruyne to Chelsea has been completed. He has signed for five and a half seasons and will continue (playing with) Genk until June.
"His signature was confirmed at 0.30 last night. De Bruyne and his agent will return back today from London, along with general director Dirk Degraen.
"Genk will hold a press conference with (director) Jacob Gunther and Dirk Degraen in which they will clarify the transfer policy.
"Afterwards, Kevin De Bruyne will also give an explanation about his transfer to the English club."
Meanwhile, Forest have confirmed that Chelsea have made a £1.5m bid for teenage striker Bamford.
Bamford has made just two substitute appearances during his short career at the City Ground.
He has also attracted interest from other clubs and Forest manager Steve Cotterill is set to discuss the bid with his chairman as he does not expect Bamford to sign a new deal with the East Midlands club.
"There has been a bid for him from Chelsea, it is for £1.5million," Cotterill told the Nottingham Evening Post.
"The problem we have is that Patrick has been offered a couple of contracts now and I am not sure he will sign a new contract at Nottingham Forest.
"We are going to have a meeting to decide where that goes. What materialises, we will find out shortly."
And AC Milan have signed 18-year-old Austrian striker Philipp Prosenik from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee. Prosenik joined Chelsea in 2009 from Rapid Vienna.

Arsenal close in on £400,000 signing of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Thomas Eisfeld after holding talks in London

The 19-year-old playmaker will complete a move to London in the next 24 hours if he passes a stringent medical

Thomas Eisfeld
Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign midfielder Thomas Eisfeld from Borussia Dortmund for around £400,000, Goal.com confirmed.

The 19-year-old German has been in London today with his agent Reza Fazeli negotiating a switch to the Premier League club.

Eisfeld, who is a product of Dortmund’s academy and has found his path to the first team blocked by the likes of German sensation Mario Gotze, is set to to complete a move to Arsenal in the next 24 hours if he passes what is expected to be a stringent medical.

The teenager's development has been hindered by keee problems - he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in 2009 - and he will be put through his paces at the club’s London Colney training ground before signing a long-term contract.

It is not known whether Eisfeld, who only turned 19 earlier this month, will go straight into the first-team set-up or start off with Arsenal’s academy. He has played most of his football for Dortmund’s Under-19 team this season, where he has been the team's leading scorer, with six goals from 12 games.
Arsenal have taken advantage of the youngster’s availability – he is out of contract in the summer – to prise the highly-rated young playmaker from Germany.

The Premier League club are likely to have to pay a compensation fee of around £400,000 to Dortmund for developing Eisfeld.

Had he stayed in Germany, Eisfeld would have faced strong competition for a place, with the Bundesliga champions having signed midfielders Moritz Leitner, Leonardo Bittencourt and Mustafa Amini over the course of the last 12 months.

Down Ports!

Make no bones about it, this is a crunch game for United when they take on third placed Portadown in their postponed game. No Sky Blue fans need reminding of what the Ports did to us in the Irish cup semi-final a couple of seasons ago and they 'mugged' us twice already this season, although we contributed to our downfall in the first game at Shamrock Park. There can be no slip-ups tomorrow night, we just can't afford them, four points from our next two games and we get a bit of breathing space. We won't be out the woods by any stretch of imagination, but it will give us a wee cushion for the four potential cup finals we then face.

Distillery, Glenavon, Dungannon and Carrick Rangers will be fighting for their very existence and they'll be 'blood and thunder' matches. Not that our next two matches against the 3rd and 2nd teams in the league will be a pushover, but we might see a bit of football played, but they'll be no quarter asked or given. United must do without the services of Captain Jenks as he serves a one game ban and young Neil Lowry is away with the Norn Iron youth team. On the plus side Sparky is expected to take Jenks place and that only leaves Spike to pick one from the two ex-Ports men, Ally and Jordan. Ally gets the Sky Blue Sports team vote, for he gives us width, but Baker gives us another striking option, or Spike could spring a surprise and introduce someone we don't know.

There's rumours flying around tonight about us going to sign a 'mystery man' from over the border, but as far as we know they are only rumours. We couldn't honestly see a player who would make a difference, playing for the sort of money we would be paying. Roy Walker has left us in 'dire straits' because he spent our budget on substandard players, many of them on two year deals and that is Spike's legacy. There's an old saying, 'you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear', but Spike and the boys are going to have to try. If they get our level of fitness up then maybe the boys can do something about trying to compete on an even keel, not get over-run as we have been in so many games this season. We need the 'right' goalie in the nets, whether it be Dwayne or Wayne and the right defence in front of him and in the absence of Jenks that will surely mean Tony Kane retaining his place in the back four. It's going to be tough, but we need to be tough, come on United, let's down those Ports!

Is this a brave new dawn for Major League Soccer?

Take De Gea out of the limelight

David De Gea (AFP)

The dust has finally settled on Manchester United's FA Cup defeat to Liverpool, and there can be little doubt that Sir Alex Ferguson's greatest concern will be David De Gea.
It was not really the Spaniard's errors that were the problem for me; I thought his mistakes for both goals were relatively minor and he was undone by some poor defending.
What really bothered me was his apparently complete lack of confidence.
It makes me wonder if he will be able to handle the scrutiny he is under at the moment.
Has he got people here to support him? Not just at the club, but also family and friends.
When most goalkeepers make mistakes they get angry - or, in the case of the ex-England keeper Ian Walker, they smile -  but nearly all offer some sort of reaction.
However, De Gea doesn't do anything at all. He is expressionless, and looks lost.
If he were a poker player, he'd probably be very successful, but for a goalkeeper it is not a good sign.
It chimes with the way he plays the game. Every goalkeeper makes mistakes, but De Gea seems worryingly passive.
Peter Schmeichel made the odd howler, which usually stemmed from making a rash decision - but at least he did something.
De Gea's mistakes come from not doing anything. He freezes, and appears indecisive.
He is a talented goalkeeper and, at 21, has time to improve.
But at the moment he looks something of a liability, and although Anders Lindegaard is a more confident replacement he is hardly a top-class goalkeeper.
I would like to see him go back to Spain on loan, to regain his confidence and gain a bit more experience.
United just need a solid, Premier League goalkeeper in the meantime, and there are a few of those.
Mark Schwarzer isn't getting any younger, but if he can do a similar job to the one Brad Friedel has done at Tottenham he will be fine for a season or two.
De Gea has played big matches in Spain, but I think it's a different game over here.
There is much more contact, many more balls flying into the box and more pressure on the keeper.
I think even Iker Casillas would struggle in the Premier League, I really do.
The problem with De Gea is that his confidence is rock-bottom, and it is spreading to his team-mates.
United should not cut ties with the Spaniard, but a spell away from the harsh spotlight of playing in goal for Manchester United would surely help.

Liverpool FC-Carlos Tevez deal unlikely as Dalglish insists 'nothing happening'

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish insists the club will not make any signings before Tuesday's transfer deadline, despite being linked with Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez.

And the Scot has confirmed that none of his senior players will be leaving Anfield this week following reports suggesting the Merseysiders are looking to offload record signing Andy Carroll.

Dalglish told the club's official website: "There'll be nothing happening here in the transfer window, in or out.

"There's no need to ask any questions about transfers or speculation or anything else."

At the weekend it was reported that Liverpool had contacted Man City last week to propose a swap deal involving Carroll and Tevez, while a report on Monday morning suggested Tevez was still a loan target for the Reds.

Man Utd target Keisuke Honda to complete £12m Lazio move

CSKA Moscow midfielder Keisuke Honda, who has been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United, is set to complete a move to Lazio.

Reports last week suggested that United had entered the race to sign the Japan international, who has been linked with a move to the Premier League on a number of occasions over the past twelve months.

As well as Liverpool, Arsenal have also shown interest in the 25-year-old, with recent reports in his homeland suggesting both clubs were considering bids for the playmaker before the end of this month.

But according to Sports Nippon, Lazio are closing in on Honda, who will join the Serie A side in a deal worth around £12million, subject to him passing a medical.

Honda is said to have met with Lazio president Claudio Lotito in Rome on Saturday to discuss a move.
He had earlier told the same publication: "I want to go to Lazio. I'm confident over my transfer. The clubs are in the final phase of negotiations, but I've have not found an agreement yet with the club.

"In today's football world everything can happen in the last hour of the market window. My will is to go playing in the Italian championship.

"It isn't the best of the world and its level is down compared to the past, but it's one of the most difficult places as an attacking player."

Bayern Munich join Man Utd in race to sign Xherdan Shaqiri - report

Bayern Munich are reportedly ready to join Manchester United and others in the race to sign FC Basel winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

Shaqiri looked set to join Galatasaray last week but saw a deal fall through after the two clubs were unable to agree a fee.

And according to Bild, Bayern are now looking to enter talks with the Swiss club with a view to completing a deal for the 20-year-old at the end of the season.

Basel are believed to be wanting as much as £20million for Shaqiri - nearly double the amount it is thought Galatasaray were willing to pay.

Basel sporting director George Heitz recently confirmed that both Manchester United and Bayern Munich were keen on signing the highly-rated Switzerland international.

He told reporters prior to the Galatasaray deal falling through that he had some "astonishing offers" for the youngster and that "clubs from Germany, Britain and Eastern Europe are asking" about the player.

Liverpool have also been linked with Shaqiri, while reports last week suggested Zenit St Petersburg were preparing to launch a bid.

Liverpool FC to sign Demba Ba as part of Andy Carroll swap deal?

Liverpool are reportedly prepared to offer Andy Carroll to former club Newcastle as part of a swap deal involving Demba Ba.

Ba has been linked with a move to Anfield throughout January after it emerged that he has a release clause in his contract at St James' Park.

Liverpool insist former Magpies favourite Carroll - who moved to Anfield twelve months ago for a club record £35million - is not for sale, but reports at the weekend revealed that they had tried to offload him to Manchester City as part of a swap deal for wantaway striker Carlos Tevez and although he insists he is happy at the club, it now appears that the Reds are at the very least consideringoffloading him.

The Merseysiders have been linked with a number of forwards during the January transfer window as manager Kenny Dalglish looks to add to his options in attack.

Although the Reds beat Manchester United 2-1 on Saturday in the FA Cup 4th round, Dalglish has seen his side struggle in front of goal this season, and Carroll has largely failed to impress.

Tevez is still thought to be a loan target for the Reds (see below), but according to the Daily Mirror, the club are also looking at signing Ba.

Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham have also been linked with the former West Ham forward in recent weeks, although Liverpool are widely thought to be frontrunners to sign the 26-year-old.

A summer move looks much more likely than a January one, with the winter transfer window slamming shut on Tuesday night.

It was reported at the weekend that Ba is ready to take advantage of his release clause - believed to be set at around £7m - and quit Newcastle at the end of the season.

The club want him to stay at St James' Park next year, but they will be powerless to stop him leaving should he wish to do so. West Ham found themselves in a similar situation last season when they were relegated from the Premier League.

Under the terms of Ba’s contract, they were forced to let him leave on a free transfer.

Carroll was linked with a return to former club Newcastle earlier this month with manager Alan Pardew admitting he would take him back if the opportunity was there. But despite the ongoing speculation about his future, the England international insists he is happy on Merseyside despite failing to impress since his big money move twelve months ago.

"I'm just here. I've signed a contract here and this is the team I'm playing for," he said.

"I love it here. All the lads are great with me in training and away from the training ground everyone has been great with me as well."

When asked by reporters if he had any regrets about leaving Tyneside to join Liverpool, he replied: "Not at all. The club has been great with me and I'm enjoying it here.

"Winning in midweek [against Manchester City in the Carling Cup] and getting to the final and then Man U coming here, beating them and getting through, it's a great feeling."
